Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Ability to Identify Personal Strengths and Weaknesses

Abstract

Adult education provides adults with knowledge, skills, and learning experiences that can support personal development, while the ability to identify personal strengths and weaknesses refers to the capacity to recognize one’s positive abilities, competencies, limitations, and areas requiring improvement. Awareness of personal strengths and weaknesses is important because it can help adults make informed decisions about learning, work, personal development, and areas where additional support or training may be required. However, some adults may have limited awareness of their abilities and areas requiring improvement. Therefore, this study aims to examine the effect of adult education on adults’ ability to identify personal strengths and weaknesses. Adult education provides learning experiences that encourage adults to examine their abilities, experiences, interests, attitudes, and performance. Through classroom activities, discussions, practical exercises, feedback, reflective tasks, and personal development activities, learners can gain opportunities to examine different aspects of their capabilities. These experiences may encourage adults to become more aware of what they can do effectively and the areas in which they may require further development. The ability to identify personal strengths and weaknesses involves recognizing individual abilities, skills, competencies, limitations, and areas that require improvement. Adults who have greater awareness of their strengths may be better positioned to make effective use of their abilities, while awareness of weaknesses can help them identify areas for further learning and development. Adult education can therefore contribute to this ability by providing opportunities for reflection, feedback, evaluation, and personal learning experiences. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education programmes within the study area. A sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure, while data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure participation in adult education and adults’ ability to identify their personal strengths and weaknesses. The data collected will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, with the relevant hypothesis tested at the 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive effect on adults’ ability to identify their personal strengths and weaknesses. Adults who participate in adult education programmes are expected to demonstrate greater awareness of their abilities, competencies, limitations, and areas requiring improvement. The findings are expected to have implications for teaching and learning in adult education. Adult educators may incorporate reflective exercises, self-evaluation activities, feedback sessions, and personal development tasks into instructional practices. Such activities can provide learners with opportunities to examine their capabilities and develop a clearer understanding of areas in which they perform well and areas requiring further development. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, programme coordinators, educational planners, and policymakers. Adult learners may benefit from greater awareness of their personal capabilities and development needs, while adult educators may gain useful strategies for promoting self-awareness through adult learning activities. Programme coordinators and policymakers may also use the findings to strengthen personal development components within adult education programmes. The study will recommend that adult education programmes provide regular opportunities for learners to reflect on their abilities and evaluate areas of personal development. Adult educators should use appropriate feedback, reflective activities, and self-evaluation exercises to help learners recognize both their strengths and weaknesses. The study will conclude that adult education can strengthen adults’ ability to identify personal strengths and weaknesses and support more informed personal and educational development.
