Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Ability to Evaluate Service Information

Abstract

Adult education refers to organised learning activities designed to provide adults with knowledge, skills, and competencies needed for effective functioning in everyday life, while the ability to evaluate service information refers to the capacity of adults to examine, compare, interpret, and assess information provided about services before making decisions. Adults regularly encounter service information relating to banking, telecommunications, transportation, insurance, healthcare, education, and other services, but limited ability to evaluate such information may result in poor choices and dissatisfaction. This study will examine the effect of adult education on adults’ ability to evaluate service information, with the purpose of determining whether adult education improves adults’ capacity to assess service-related information effectively. Adult education can provide learners with literacy, communication, critical thinking, and practical information-processing skills. Through structured learning activities, adults can develop the ability to identify important details, distinguish relevant information from unnecessary information, compare alternatives, and question unclear claims. These skills can be applied when adults encounter information provided by service providers through advertisements, brochures, websites, notices, agreements, and other communication channels. The ability to evaluate service information involves examining the accuracy, relevance, completeness, clarity, and usefulness of information before making decisions about a service. Adults may need to compare service features, prices, conditions, benefits, limitations, and other relevant details before selecting a provider. Adult education can strengthen the knowledge and reasoning skills required to assess such information and determine whether it is suitable for a particular need. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education programmes. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to adult education and adults’ ability to evaluate service information. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a significant effect on adults’ ability to evaluate service information. It is expected that adults with greater exposure to adult education will demonstrate stronger abilities to identify relevant details, compare service alternatives, assess conditions, and determine the usefulness of service information. The study may further establish that adult education enhances adults’ capacity to examine service information carefully before making decisions. The findings will have implications for adult education practice and functional learning. Adult educators may incorporate practical activities that expose learners to real-life service information and require them to compare, interpret, and evaluate different service options. Such activities may include examining service advertisements, price information, service conditions, provider information, and other materials commonly encountered in everyday transactions. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, adult education programme administrators, service providers, educational planners, and policymakers. Adult learners may benefit from improved abilities to assess service information before making decisions, while adult educators may gain useful information for developing practical learning activities. Educational planners and policymakers may also use the findings to strengthen adult education programmes that develop practical information evaluation skills. The study will recommend that adult education programmes should incorporate practical exercises that develop adults’ ability to evaluate service information. Adult educators should provide learners with realistic service materials and teach them to compare relevant features, costs, conditions, benefits, and limitations before making decisions. The study will conclude that adult education can improve adults’ ability to evaluate service information and should therefore include practical information assessment skills as part of functional adult learning.
