Effect of Adult Education on Adults’ Ability to Develop Social Enterprise Ideas

Abstract

Adult Education refers to organized learning opportunities that enable adults to acquire knowledge, skills, and competencies for personal, social, and economic development, while social enterprise ideas refer to business concepts designed to address social or community problems through sustainable products, services, or income-generating activities. The ability to develop social enterprise ideas is important because it can help adults identify community needs and create innovative approaches that combine social value with economic sustainability. However, some adults may lack the knowledge and skills required to identify social problems, generate feasible enterprise ideas, and connect them with sustainable business opportunities. Therefore, this study aims to examine the effect of Adult Education on adults’ ability to develop social enterprise ideas. Adult Education provides adults with opportunities to acquire practical knowledge through classroom instruction, discussions, workshops, projects, and experiential learning activities. These learning experiences can expose adults to problem identification, creative thinking, opportunity recognition, basic business planning, resource identification, and community-oriented enterprise development. Through practical activities, learners can examine challenges within their communities and explore possible products or services that could address identified needs while creating sustainable economic opportunities. The development of social enterprise ideas involves identifying a social need, generating possible solutions, determining the target beneficiaries, considering available resources, and assessing whether the proposed idea can operate sustainably. Adults who participate in relevant educational activities may become better equipped to analyse community needs, generate innovative solutions, and organize their ideas into practical enterprise concepts. Adult Education can therefore contribute to improved social enterprise idea development by strengthening adults’ knowledge, creativity, problem-solving abilities, and understanding of basic enterprise principles. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education and entrepreneurship-related programmes, from which a representative sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure participation in Adult Education and adults’ ability to develop social enterprise ideas. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a significant positive effect on adults’ ability to develop social enterprise ideas. Adults who participate in relevant educational programmes are expected to demonstrate greater ability to identify social needs, generate enterprise ideas, develop possible solutions, identify target beneficiaries, and consider the feasibility of proposed initiatives. The study may further indicate that practical and community-oriented learning activities can strengthen adults’ confidence and competence in developing socially relevant enterprise concepts. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in Adult Education by emphasizing the importance of incorporating social enterprise development activities into entrepreneurship and community-oriented learning programmes. Adult educators may use community problem-solving exercises, case studies, project work, idea-generation activities, and practical enterprise planning tasks to help learners transform identified social challenges into potential enterprise ideas. Such approaches can make adult learning more practical and encourage learners to apply acquired knowledge to real community needs. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, prospective social entrepreneurs, adult educators, community development organizations, entrepreneurship trainers, and policymakers. Adult learners may gain improved ability to identify social problems and develop enterprise-based solutions, while educators and entrepreneurship trainers may gain useful approaches for strengthening practical enterprise education. Community organizations and policymakers may also use the findings to support educational initiatives that encourage adults to develop sustainable solutions to social and economic challenges. The study will recommend that Adult Education programmes incorporate social enterprise development activities into relevant entrepreneurship and skills-development courses. Adult educators should provide learners with opportunities to identify community needs, generate innovative solutions, assess feasibility, and develop basic social enterprise concepts. Training programmes should also emphasize practical projects that connect learning with real community challenges. The study concludes that effective Adult Education can strengthen adults’ ability to develop social enterprise ideas and equip them with knowledge and skills for creating initiatives that address social needs while supporting economic sustainability.
