Effect of Retrieval Practice on Students’ Recall of Anatomical Structures
Abstract
The study examines the effect of retrieval practice on students’ recall of anatomical structures, with emphasis on how actively recalling previously learned information may improve students’ ability to remember and identify human anatomical structures. Anatomy learning involves the acquisition of extensive structural names, locations, relationships, and distinguishing features, which may be difficult to retain through passive reading alone. Retrieval practice provides students with repeated opportunities to actively recall learned information through activities such as quizzes, short-answer questions, flashcards, and structure identification exercises. The study will assess the effect of retrieval practice on students’ ability to recall anatomical structures. The specific objectives will include determining students’ level of anatomical structure recall before exposure to retrieval practice, assessing their recall performance following the intervention, comparing the performance of students exposed to retrieval practice with those using conventional revision methods, and identifying anatomical structures that remain difficult for students to recall. The study will also assess students’ ability to correctly identify structures and associate them with their appropriate anatomical locations and relationships. A quasi-experimental research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students studying human anatomy or related health science courses will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique and assigned to relevant study groups. Data will be collected using standardized anatomical structure recall tests administered before and after the learning intervention, together with practical or image-based identification tasks where appropriate. The data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential tests will be applied to determine differences in recall performance between the study groups. The study is expected to reveal improved recall of anatomical structures among students exposed to retrieval practice. Students may demonstrate greater ability to remember anatomical names, locations, distinguishing features, and spatial relationships compared with students relying primarily on conventional revision methods. The improvement may be more evident for frequently retrieved structures, although small, closely related, or less familiar structures may continue to present greater recall difficulties. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, curriculum planners, and health science educators involved in undergraduate anatomy teaching. The study may provide evidence on the usefulness of active recall as a learning strategy for strengthening anatomical structure recognition and retention. It may also support the incorporation of quizzes, flashcards, short-answer activities, spotter exercises, and other retrieval-based activities into anatomy revision and practical teaching. The study will conclude by determining the effect of retrieval practice on students’ recall of anatomical structures. It is recommended that retrieval-based learning activities should be incorporated into anatomy teaching and revision alongside practical demonstrations, anatomical specimens, models, diagrams, and other appropriate learning resources. Further studies involving larger student populations and longer follow-up periods are recommended to determine the sustained effect of retrieval practice on anatomical knowledge retention and practical performance.
