Effect of Radiological Image-Based Teaching on Students’ Understanding of Regional Anatomy

Abstract

The study assesses the effect of radiological image-based teaching on students’ understanding of regional anatomy. Radiological images provide visual representations of anatomical structures within their actual spatial relationships and may help students connect conventional anatomical descriptions with structures observed in clinical imaging. The integration of radiological images into regional anatomy teaching may therefore provide additional opportunities for students to understand the position, orientation, and relationships of structures within different body regions. The study will assess the effect of radiological image-based teaching on students’ understanding of regional anatomy. The specific objectives will include determining students’ regional anatomy knowledge before exposure to radiological image-based teaching, assessing their understanding after the teaching intervention, evaluating their ability to identify anatomical structures and relationships on radiological images, and assessing students’ perceptions of radiological images as a learning resource for regional anatomy. A quasi-experimental research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate anatomy students will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique and assigned to relevant study groups where applicable. Data will be collected using a structured regional anatomy assessment administered before and after the radiological image-based teaching sessions, together with an appropriately structured questionnaire for assessing students’ perceptions of the teaching approach. The data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate comparative inferential tests applied where necessary. The study is expected to show differences in students’ understanding of regional anatomy following exposure to radiological image-based teaching. Students may demonstrate improved recognition of anatomical structures, understanding of spatial relationships, and interpretation of structures within selected body regions. Variations may also be observed in students’ ability to relate radiological appearances to conventional anatomical descriptions, particularly when structures are presented in sectional or unfamiliar imaging orientations. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, radiologists, medical educators, curriculum developers, and institutions involved in health sciences education. The study may provide information on the potential contribution of radiological images to regional anatomy learning and identify areas where imaging resources can complement specimens, models, diagrams, and conventional teaching methods. It may also support the integration of clinically oriented imaging into undergraduate anatomy instruction. The study will conclude by assessing the effect of radiological image-based teaching on students’ understanding of regional anatomy and determining its potential contribution to anatomy learning. It is recommended that appropriately selected radiological images should be integrated into regional anatomy teaching alongside conventional anatomical resources and practical demonstrations. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations and different radiological teaching approaches are also recommended.
