Comparative Study of Conventional and Technology-Enhanced Anatomy Laboratories

Abstract

The study compares conventional and technology-enhanced anatomy laboratories in relation to students’ practical learning experience and understanding of human anatomy among undergraduate students. Conventional anatomy laboratories rely mainly on physical specimens, models, charts, atlases, and instructor-led demonstrations, while technology-enhanced laboratories incorporate resources such as three-dimensional anatomical models, digital atlases, interactive applications, computer-based imaging, and other digital learning tools. Comparing these laboratory environments may provide useful information on how different practical learning resources support students’ engagement with anatomical structures and relationships. The specific objectives will include assessing students’ baseline practical anatomy knowledge, evaluating students’ learning experience in conventional and technology-enhanced anatomy laboratories, comparing their performance in anatomical structure identification under both laboratory environments, and determining differences in students’ understanding of anatomical relationships and spatial orientation. Attention will also be given to students’ engagement, ease of visualization, access to practical resources, and ability to relate theoretical anatomical knowledge to practical observations. A comparative quasi-experimental research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students enrolled in anatomy or related health science programmes will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique and assigned to conventional and technology-enhanced laboratory groups. Students in the conventional laboratory group will learn using physical specimens, models, charts, and other traditional resources, while the technology-enhanced group will receive practical instruction supported by digital anatomical models, interactive resources, imaging materials, or other appropriate technologies. Data will be collected using standardized anatomy knowledge tests, practical structure-identification assessments, and structured questionnaires on students’ learning experiences. The data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential statistical tests will be applied to compare the two groups. The study is expected to reveal differences in students’ practical learning experiences and anatomical knowledge between the two laboratory environments. Technology-enhanced laboratory activities may provide greater opportunities for three-dimensional visualization, repeated exploration, and observation of structures from different perspectives, while conventional laboratories may provide direct interaction with physical specimens and models. Students in both environments may continue to experience difficulties with small, deep, closely related, or complex anatomical structures that require detailed observation and strong spatial understanding. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, medical educators, curriculum planners, institutional administrators, and other health science educators involved in practical anatomy education. The study may provide useful information on the educational value of combining physical anatomical resources with appropriate technological tools. It may also support decisions concerning the development of anatomy laboratories, selection of practical teaching resources, and integration of digital technologies into undergraduate anatomy education. The study will conclude by comparing conventional and technology-enhanced anatomy laboratories in relation to students’ practical learning and anatomical understanding. It is recommended that anatomy laboratories provide appropriate practical resources and incorporate suitable technological tools where available to complement direct interaction with anatomical specimens and models, while further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations should be conducted to evaluate the long-term educational outcomes of different anatomy laboratory environments.
