Assessment of Students’ Knowledge of Topographical Anatomy

Abstract

The study examines students’ knowledge of topographical anatomy, with emphasis on their understanding of the location, arrangement, and spatial relationships of anatomical structures within specific regions of the human body. Topographical anatomy provides an important foundation for understanding how bones, muscles, nerves, blood vessels, organs, and other structures are arranged in relation to one another. Adequate knowledge of these relationships is essential for practical anatomy learning and for developing a clinically relevant understanding of the human body. The study will assess students’ knowledge of topographical anatomy and determine their ability to identify the relative positions and relationships of anatomical structures within selected body regions. The specific objectives will include assessing students’ understanding of regional anatomical relationships, determining their ability to identify structures according to their anatomical location, examining their knowledge of surface and deep structures, and identifying areas of topographical anatomy that may present difficulties during learning and practical assessment. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students who have received relevant anatomy training will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and standardized anatomical identification or image-based assessment focusing on regional and topographical relationships. The data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential statistical tests will be applied where necessary. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge of topographical anatomy among the students. Students may demonstrate stronger knowledge of major structures and commonly studied anatomical regions, while deeper structures, closely related structures, and complex spatial relationships may present greater difficulty. Differences may also be observed in students’ ability to distinguish between superficial and deep structures and to accurately relate structures to surrounding anatomical landmarks. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, practical anatomy instructors, radiologists, surgeons, and other healthcare educators involved in teaching and applying regional anatomy. The study may provide useful information for identifying areas where students require additional practical demonstrations, anatomical specimens, models, diagrams, or image-based learning. Improved knowledge of topographical anatomy may also strengthen students’ ability to understand clinically relevant relationships between anatomical structures. The study will conclude by documenting students’ knowledge of topographical anatomy and identifying areas of strength and difficulty in their understanding of regional structural relationships. It is recommended that topographical anatomy should be taught using practical and spatially oriented approaches that combine anatomical specimens, models, diagrams, and appropriate imaging resources. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations should also be conducted to provide broader information on students’ understanding of topographical anatomy.
