Relationship Between Spatial Reasoning and Cross-Sectional Anatomy Performance
Abstract
The study examines the relationship between spatial reasoning and cross-sectional anatomy performance among undergraduate students, with emphasis on how the ability to interpret spatial positions, orientations, and relationships may influence students’ understanding of anatomical structures presented in sectional views. Cross-sectional anatomy requires students to mentally interpret structures across different planes and recognize their relative positions within the body. Spatial reasoning may therefore play an important role in helping students understand complex anatomical relationships and translate two-dimensional sectional images into meaningful three-dimensional representations. The study will assess students’ level of spatial reasoning ability and their performance in cross-sectional anatomy. The specific objectives will include determining students’ spatial reasoning ability, assessing their performance in identifying and interpreting anatomical structures on cross-sectional images, examining the relationship between spatial reasoning and cross-sectional anatomy performance, and identifying anatomical regions or sectional views that present greater difficulty to students. The study will also assess students’ ability to recognize anatomical orientation and maintain structural relationships across different sectional levels. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students studying human anatomy or related health science courses will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected using standardized spatial reasoning tasks and a structured cross-sectional anatomy assessment involving anatomical diagrams, sectional images, and identification tasks. The data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while an appropriate correlation or inferential statistical test will be applied to determine the relationship between spatial reasoning ability and cross-sectional anatomy performance. The study is expected to reveal a positive relationship between spatial reasoning ability and performance in cross-sectional anatomy. Students with stronger spatial reasoning skills may demonstrate better ability to identify structures, interpret their positions, and maintain anatomical relationships across different sectional planes. However, complex regions containing numerous closely positioned structures, unfamiliar sectional levels, and structures with similar appearances may remain challenging for some students. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, curriculum planners, and health science educators involved in teaching sectional and radiological anatomy. The study may provide useful evidence on the importance of spatial reasoning in understanding cross-sectional anatomical information and may support the incorporation of spatial visualization activities into anatomy education. The findings may also encourage the use of three-dimensional models, radiological images, interactive anatomical resources, and sectional anatomy exercises to strengthen students’ interpretation skills. The study will conclude by determining the relationship between spatial reasoning and cross-sectional anatomy performance among the study population. It is recommended that spatial reasoning skills should be appropriately developed through practical activities involving anatomical orientation, sectional images, three-dimensional visualization, and interpretation of anatomical relationships. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations are recommended to provide broader evidence on the role of spatial reasoning in cross-sectional anatomy learning and performance.
