Effect of Specimen Preservation Techniques on the Teaching Quality of Anatomy Laboratories
Abstract
The study examines the effect of specimen preservation techniques on the teaching quality of anatomy laboratories. Proper preservation of anatomical specimens is essential for maintaining their structural integrity, appearance, durability, and usefulness during practical anatomy instruction. Poorly preserved specimens may deteriorate, become difficult to identify, or limit students’ opportunities to observe anatomical structures clearly. Effective preservation techniques may therefore contribute to the availability of suitable teaching specimens and support the delivery of practical anatomy education. The study will investigate how specimen preservation practices influence the quality of teaching and learning activities within anatomy laboratories. The study will assess the preservation techniques used for anatomical specimens and examine their influence on important aspects of laboratory teaching. Areas of interest will include specimen appearance, structural clarity, durability, ease of identification, accessibility during practical sessions, and suitability for repeated instructional use. The study will also consider the extent to which preserved specimens support instructor demonstrations, student observation, practical identification, and understanding of anatomical relationships. Appropriate laboratory observation procedures and structured questionnaires will be used to obtain relevant information. A descriptive cross-sectional research design will be adopted for the study. Anatomy laboratory personnel, instructors, and relevant undergraduate students will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected through structured questionnaires, observation checklists, and assessment of available anatomical specimens and preservation practices. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential tests may be applied to determine relationships between preservation practices and indicators of teaching quality. The study is expected to reveal that appropriate specimen preservation techniques contribute positively to the quality of anatomy laboratory teaching. Well-preserved specimens may provide clearer anatomical features, remain usable for longer periods, and support more effective demonstrations and practical identification activities. Inadequate preservation may be associated with tissue deterioration, changes in specimen appearance, reduced structural clarity, unpleasant laboratory conditions, and limitations in repeated use. Differences may also be observed in the usefulness of specimens depending on their type, preservation method, storage conditions, and frequency of laboratory use. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy laboratory instructors, laboratory technologists, academic administrators, and institutions responsible for anatomy education. The findings may provide useful information for improving specimen preservation practices, laboratory management, procurement decisions, and practical teaching resources. Better preservation may also support consistent access to suitable anatomical specimens and create more effective conditions for students to observe and identify structures during practical anatomy sessions. The study will conclude by determining the effect of specimen preservation techniques on the teaching quality of anatomy laboratories. It is recommended that anatomy laboratories adopt appropriate preservation procedures, maintain suitable storage conditions, regularly monitor specimen quality, and provide adequate training for personnel responsible for specimen preservation and handling. Further studies involving larger numbers of anatomy laboratories and different categories of anatomical specimens should be conducted to establish broader evidence on preservation practices and practical anatomy teaching quality.
