Effect of Improved Practical Resources on Students’ Anatomical Structure Recognition

Abstract

The study examines the effect of improved practical resources on students’ recognition of anatomical structures among undergraduate students. Practical resources such as anatomical specimens, models, charts, atlases, prosections, radiological images, and other visual learning materials provide students with opportunities to observe and identify structures directly during anatomy learning. Adequate and accessible practical resources may enhance students’ exposure to anatomical features and improve their ability to distinguish structures based on their location, shape, relationships, and identifying characteristics. The study will therefore investigate whether improved practical resources can enhance students’ recognition of anatomical structures. The specific objectives will include determining students’ baseline ability to recognize anatomical structures, assessing their performance following exposure to improved practical resources, evaluating their ability to identify anatomical landmarks and structural relationships, and comparing structure-recognition performance before and after the use of improved practical resources. Attention will be given to students’ recognition of major anatomical structures, smaller structures, closely related structures, and structures presented through different practical and visual materials. A quasi-experimental research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students enrolled in anatomy or related health science programmes will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique and assigned to suitable study groups. The intervention group will receive anatomy instruction using improved practical resources, while the comparison group will receive conventional practical instruction using the resources routinely available to them. Data will be collected using standardized anatomical structure-recognition tests involving specimens, models, diagrams, images, and other appropriate practical materials. The data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential statistical tests will be applied to determine differences between the study groups. The study is expected to reveal improved recognition of anatomical structures among students exposed to improved practical resources. Greater access to relevant specimens, models, visual materials, and other practical resources may improve students’ ability to locate, identify, differentiate, and recall anatomical structures and their relationships. However, students may continue to experience difficulties with small, deep, damaged, closely related, or visually similar structures, particularly when practical resources do not adequately represent different anatomical variations. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, medical educators, curriculum planners, institutional administrators, and other health science educators involved in practical anatomy instruction. The study may provide useful information on the importance of adequate practical resources in supporting students’ anatomical structure recognition and practical learning. It may also contribute to decisions concerning the provision, improvement, and appropriate use of practical materials in anatomy laboratories and teaching environments. The study will conclude by determining the effect of improved practical resources on students’ anatomical structure recognition. It is recommended that anatomy laboratories provide adequate, relevant, accessible, and well-maintained practical resources to support students’ repeated exposure to anatomical structures, while further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations should be conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of different practical resources in anatomy education.
