Effect of Anatomy Laboratory Modernization on Students’ Practical Learning Experience

Abstract

The study examines the effect of anatomy laboratory modernization on students’ practical learning experience among undergraduate students. Anatomy laboratory modernization involves the improvement of practical learning environments through the provision of updated anatomical specimens, models, imaging resources, digital technologies, laboratory equipment, improved workspaces, and other relevant instructional facilities. A modernized anatomy laboratory may provide students with greater opportunities for direct observation, interaction with anatomical materials, and practical application of theoretical knowledge. The study will therefore investigate how laboratory modernization influences students’ experiences during practical anatomy learning. The specific objectives will include determining the availability and adequacy of modern anatomy laboratory facilities, assessing students’ practical learning experiences in the laboratory, examining the effect of modernized laboratory resources on students’ engagement during practical sessions, and identifying areas of practical anatomy learning that may benefit from improved laboratory facilities. Attention will be given to students’ access to anatomical specimens, models, imaging resources, digital learning tools, laboratory equipment, workspace, and other facilities used during practical anatomy sessions. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students enrolled in anatomy or related health science programmes will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to assess students’ access to modern laboratory resources and their practical learning experiences. Students’ experiences may be assessed in terms of engagement, ease of structure identification, understanding of anatomical relationships, participation in practical activities, confidence during laboratory sessions, and satisfaction with available resources. The data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential statistical tests will be applied to determine the relationship between laboratory modernization and students’ practical learning experience. The study is expected to reveal that improved anatomy laboratory facilities are associated with more positive practical learning experiences among students. Access to appropriate specimens, modern anatomical models, digital resources, imaging materials, and well-equipped workspaces may improve students’ engagement, observation, structure identification, and understanding of anatomical relationships. However, some practical learning challenges may persist where resources are limited, equipment is difficult to access, or students have insufficient opportunities for repeated practical exposure. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, medical educators, institutional administrators, curriculum planners, and other health science educators involved in practical anatomy education. The study may provide useful information for evaluating the adequacy of anatomy laboratory facilities and understanding how the practical learning environment influences students’ educational experiences. It may also support decisions concerning the provision, replacement, and improvement of practical anatomy resources and laboratory facilities. The study will conclude by determining the effect of anatomy laboratory modernization on students’ practical learning experience. It is recommended that anatomy laboratories be equipped and maintained with appropriate modern resources, functional equipment, suitable anatomical materials, and adequate learning spaces to support effective practical education, while further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations should be conducted to evaluate the long-term educational benefits of anatomy laboratory modernization.
