Assessment of the Availability of Anatomical Specimens in Teaching Laboratories

Abstract

The study examines the availability of anatomical specimens in teaching laboratories, with emphasis on the presence, accessibility, adequacy, and condition of specimens used for practical anatomy education. Anatomical specimens provide students with direct exposure to human structures and allow them to observe the three-dimensional form, relationships, orientation, and distinguishing features of anatomical structures. Their availability is therefore an important component of practical anatomy teaching and may influence students’ opportunities to develop practical identification skills. The study will assess the availability of anatomical specimens in teaching laboratories and determine the types of specimens accessible to undergraduate students during practical anatomy sessions. The specific objectives will include assessing the availability of cadaveric specimens, prosections, bones, organs, models, and other anatomical materials, determining the adequacy of specimens in relation to student practical activities, examining their accessibility during scheduled laboratory sessions, and identifying challenges associated with the availability and use of anatomical specimens. A descriptive cross-sectional research design will be adopted for the study. Selected teaching laboratories in relevant higher institutions will be assessed using an appropriate sampling approach. Data will be collected through a structured laboratory observation checklist, relevant laboratory records, and questionnaires administered to anatomy students and, where appropriate, laboratory personnel. Information on specimen type, quantity, condition, accessibility, maintenance, and suitability for practical teaching will be recorded and analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary. The study is expected to reveal variations in the availability and adequacy of anatomical specimens across teaching laboratories. Some commonly used specimens may be readily available, while certain specialized, well-preserved, or less frequently encountered structures may be limited. Differences may also be observed in the condition, accessibility, maintenance, and quantity of specimens available for practical sessions, with larger student groups potentially placing greater demands on available laboratory resources. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, laboratory managers, curriculum developers, institutional administrators, and other stakeholders involved in practical anatomy education. The study may provide useful information for identifying gaps in laboratory resources and improving the planning, acquisition, preservation, maintenance, and allocation of anatomical specimens. Adequate availability of appropriate specimens may provide students with more opportunities for direct observation and practical identification of anatomical structures. The study will conclude by documenting the availability, accessibility, adequacy, and condition of anatomical specimens in teaching laboratories and identifying major challenges affecting their use for practical anatomy education. It is recommended that institutions should regularly assess their anatomical laboratory resources and ensure adequate provision, proper preservation, maintenance, and appropriate access to specimens for practical teaching. Further studies involving multiple institutions should also be conducted to provide broader information on anatomical laboratory resources and practical anatomy education.
