Assessment of Students’ Knowledge of Cadaver Preservation Procedures

Abstract

The study examines students’ knowledge of cadaver preservation procedures, with emphasis on their understanding of the principles, practices, and precautions involved in maintaining cadaveric specimens for anatomy education. Proper preservation is important for maintaining the structural integrity, appearance, and usability of cadavers during practical anatomy sessions. Adequate knowledge of preservation procedures is therefore relevant to students’ understanding of cadaver handling, laboratory safety, ethical practice, and the effective use of human anatomical specimens. The study will assess students’ knowledge of cadaver preservation procedures and determine their understanding of the methods and practices used to maintain cadaveric specimens. The specific objectives will include assessing students’ knowledge of preservation techniques, storage requirements, preservation materials, infection-control measures, appropriate handling procedures, and factors that may affect the condition of preserved cadavers. The study will also identify areas of cadaver preservation where students demonstrate limited understanding. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students with practical exposure to cadaver-based anatomy will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire covering principles of cadaver preservation, storage conditions, handling procedures, safety precautions, and ethical considerations. The data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential statistical tests will be applied where necessary. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge of cadaver preservation procedures among the students. Students may demonstrate stronger knowledge of basic handling and storage practices, while more technical aspects such as preservation principles, appropriate storage conditions, infection-control measures, and factors affecting tissue integrity may present greater difficulty. Differences may also be observed in students’ understanding of the relationship between proper preservation procedures and the quality and safety of cadaver-based practical learning. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, laboratory managers, dissection instructors, and other professionals involved in cadaver-based anatomy education. The study may provide useful information for identifying gaps in students’ knowledge and improving instruction on cadaver handling, preservation, laboratory safety, and ethical practice. Improved knowledge may also promote responsible use of cadaveric specimens and support safer and more effective practical anatomy sessions. The study will conclude by documenting students’ knowledge of cadaver preservation procedures and identifying areas requiring further attention in anatomy education. It is recommended that preservation principles, specimen handling, storage, safety precautions, and ethical responsibilities should be incorporated more explicitly into practical anatomy training. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations should also be conducted to provide broader information on students’ knowledge of cadaver preservation and responsible cadaver-based learning.
