Modelling Policyholder Survival Using Actuarial Models

Abstract

The study examines the modelling of policyholder survival using actuarial models, with emphasis on the application of quantitative techniques to estimate the probability that policyholders will remain alive over specified periods. Policyholder survival is an important consideration in life insurance because the timing of death and survival directly influences the payment of insurance benefits, premium calculations, reserves, and other financial obligations. Accurate survival modelling therefore provides a foundation for effective actuarial valuation and long-term insurance risk management. The study will investigate how actuarial models can be used to estimate policyholder survival probabilities and assess patterns in the survival experience of insured individuals. It will focus on factors such as age, mortality rates, life expectancy, policy duration, and survival probabilities. The study will also examine how differences in mortality experience across age groups may affect the accuracy of survival estimates and the assessment of future life insurance obligations. The study will consider relevant actuarial techniques, including life tables, survival functions, mortality rates, force of mortality, and actuarial survival models. These techniques will be applied to evaluate the probability of survival over different periods and to identify patterns in policyholder survival experience. The findings may indicate that changes in mortality experience and life expectancy can substantially influence projected survival outcomes. The study is also expected to demonstrate that the reliability of survival estimates depends on the quality of mortality data and the suitability of the assumptions used in the actuarial models. The study is expected to provide useful information for actuaries, life insurance companies, pension administrators, regulators, and other stakeholders involved in long-term financial planning. Accurate survival modelling may support life insurance pricing, reserve estimation, benefit valuation, mortality risk assessment, and product design. The findings may also assist insurers in improving their understanding of policyholder longevity and in making more informed actuarial decisions. The study concludes that actuarial modelling of policyholder survival is essential for accurately assessing future insurance obligations and managing mortality-related risks. It is therefore recommended that insurance companies regularly update survival models using reliable mortality experience and appropriate actuarial assumptions. Continuous monitoring of mortality trends and periodic validation of survival models are also recommended to improve the accuracy of policyholder survival estimates and strengthen long-term insurance planning.
