Modelling Insurance Losses Under Proportional Reinsurance
Abstract
The study examines the modelling of insurance losses under proportional reinsurance, focusing on how actuarial models can be used to estimate the losses retained by an insurer and the portion transferred to a reinsurer. Proportional reinsurance involves sharing premiums and claims between the insurer and reinsurer according to an agreed proportion. Understanding the distribution of losses under such arrangements is important for assessing risk exposure, estimating claims liabilities, and supporting effective reinsurance planning. The study will investigate how proportional reinsurance affects the distribution and financial value of insurance losses. It will examine the relationship between gross insurance losses, the insurer's retained losses, and reinsurance recoveries under different proportional arrangements. The study will also assess how changes in the reinsurance proportion influence the insurer's expected losses and overall exposure. The study will focus on actuarial loss models applicable to proportional reinsurance arrangements. Factors such as claim frequency, claim severity, retention proportions, ceded losses, retained losses, and aggregate claims will be considered. Quota-share and surplus reinsurance structures may be examined to determine how proportional risk sharing affects the distribution of insurance losses. Probability distributions and aggregate loss techniques may also be applied to model the resulting retained losses. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Historical insurance claims data and relevant reinsurance parameters will be analysed using actuarial and statistical techniques. Descriptive statistics, probability distribution analysis, loss modelling, and scenario analysis will be employed to estimate gross losses, retained losses, and reinsurance recoveries. Alternative proportional reinsurance levels may also be modelled to examine their effects on the insurer's loss exposure. The study is expected to reveal that proportional reinsurance reduces the insurer's retained losses in direct proportion to the agreed sharing arrangement. Higher proportions of risk ceded to the reinsurer are expected to reduce the insurer's individual and aggregate retained losses, while increasing the amount of losses recoverable from the reinsurer. The findings may also indicate that the distribution of retained losses changes as the proportional retention level varies. The findings are expected to provide useful information for insurers and actuaries in assessing the financial implications of proportional reinsurance arrangements. The study may assist insurance companies in estimating retained loss exposure, forecasting reinsurance recoveries, and evaluating appropriate levels of risk transfer. It may also support actuarial assessment of reinsurance arrangements for premium planning, claims management, and financial risk management. The study concludes that actuarial modelling provides an important framework for analysing insurance losses under proportional reinsurance because it allows insurers to quantify retained and ceded losses under different reinsurance arrangements. It is therefore recommended that insurers use appropriate loss models and historical claims experience when evaluating proportional reinsurance structures. Effective modelling may contribute to improved risk transfer decisions, more accurate loss estimates, and better management of insurance exposure.
