Estimation of Life Expectancy Using Actuarial Life Tables

Abstract

The study examines the estimation of life expectancy using actuarial life tables, with emphasis on how life table techniques can be applied to determine the expected length of life of individuals within a population. Life expectancy is an important demographic and actuarial measure that provides an estimate of the average number of years an individual is expected to live based on prevailing mortality conditions. Actuarial life tables provide a structured framework for analysing mortality and survival patterns and are widely applied in life insurance, pension planning, annuity valuation, and demographic studies. Accurate estimation of life expectancy is therefore essential for effective actuarial and financial decision-making. The study focuses on the application of actuarial life table functions in estimating life expectancy at different ages. Life tables provide information on mortality rates, probabilities of survival, numbers surviving to specific ages, and expected future lifetime. The study considers how these components can be used to calculate life expectancy and assess differences in expected survival across selected age groups. The analysis also examines the importance of reliable mortality information in producing meaningful estimates of future lifetime. The study further examines the relevance of life expectancy estimates to actuarial applications. Accurate estimates can assist insurance companies in determining premiums, valuing life insurance contracts, assessing annuity payments, and estimating future liabilities. Life expectancy information is also useful in pension planning and other financial decisions that depend on expected survival periods. The study therefore considers how actuarial life tables can provide reliable estimates that support the management of long-term financial obligations. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant mortality data will be used to construct or analyse actuarial life table functions and estimate life expectancy at selected ages. Descriptive and actuarial techniques will be employed to examine mortality rates, survival probabilities, and expected future lifetime. The resulting estimates will be analysed to determine patterns in life expectancy and assess the usefulness of actuarial life tables in measuring expected survival. The study is expected to reveal that actuarial life tables provide a systematic and effective method for estimating life expectancy. The findings are expected to demonstrate variations in expected lifetime across different ages and mortality conditions. The analysis may also show that improvements or changes in mortality rates can produce corresponding changes in life expectancy estimates, highlighting the importance of using appropriate and updated mortality data when constructing actuarial life tables. The study is further expected to establish that accurate life expectancy estimation can contribute significantly to actuarial and financial planning. Reliable estimates may help insurers and pension providers make better decisions regarding premiums, annuity values, reserves, and long-term financial commitments. Regular review and updating of life table assumptions may also improve the accuracy of actuarial calculations and reduce the risk of relying on outdated mortality information. The study concludes that actuarial life tables provide an important statistical and actuarial framework for estimating life expectancy and understanding population survival patterns. It is therefore recommended that actuarial professionals, insurance companies, and other relevant institutions use reliable mortality data and regularly update life table assumptions to reflect changes in mortality experience. Accurate life expectancy estimates can support effective insurance pricing, pension planning, annuity valuation, and long-term financial risk management.
