Effect of Unit Price Fluctuations on Investment-Linked Insurance Benefits

Abstract

Unit price fluctuations refer to changes in the value of investment units underlying investment-linked insurance policies. In these insurance products, policyholder benefits are partly linked to the value and performance of selected investment funds. Changes in unit prices can therefore influence the value of policy units and consequently affect the benefits payable to policyholders. Understanding these fluctuations is important for assessing the financial value and risk characteristics of investment-linked insurance contracts. This study will examine the effect of unit price fluctuations on investment-linked insurance benefits. It will assess how changes in unit prices influence the value of policyholder investment units and the resulting insurance benefits. The study will also compare benefit values under different patterns of unit price movements to determine the extent to which fluctuations in investment fund values affect policyholder outcomes. The study will focus on unit price fluctuations, investment-linked insurance benefits, policyholder funds, investment units, fund performance, investment returns, unit prices, policy values, premium contributions, market movements, investment risk, benefit values, policy duration, and actuarial valuation. Financial and actuarial modelling techniques will be applied to examine changes in investment-linked benefits under different unit price conditions and investment performance assumptions. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant unit prices, investment fund values, premium contributions, number of units held, policy durations, benefit amounts, and investment returns will be analysed using actuarial and financial valuation techniques. Descriptive analysis, comparative analysis, trend analysis, sensitivity analysis, and mathematical modelling will be used to evaluate differences in investment-linked insurance benefits associated with unit price fluctuations. The study is expected to reveal that unit price fluctuations may have a significant effect on investment-linked insurance benefits. Increases in unit prices are expected to raise the value of policyholder investment units and potentially increase associated benefits, while declines in unit prices may reduce policy values and benefit amounts. The magnitude of the effect may depend on the size and frequency of price movements, investment fund performance, premium contributions, number of units held, policy duration, and applicable policy charges. The study will be useful to actuaries, life insurance companies, investment managers, policyholders, financial advisers, underwriters, regulators, researchers, and students of actuarial science. It may provide useful information for assessing investment-linked policy values, managing investment risks, designing insurance products, evaluating benefit structures, and improving policyholder understanding of the relationship between investment performance and insurance benefits. The study concludes that unit price fluctuations are important determinants of investment-linked insurance benefits because changes in investment unit values can directly influence policyholder fund values and associated benefits. It is therefore recommended that insurers carefully monitor unit price movements, communicate investment risks clearly, and incorporate appropriate market and investment assumptions when evaluating and managing investment-linked insurance products.
