Effect of Underwriting Information Accuracy on Premium Rating
Abstract
Underwriting information provides the foundation for assessing insurance risks and determining appropriate premium rates. The accuracy of information supplied during the underwriting process can influence the insurer’s understanding of a policyholder’s risk characteristics, expected claims exposure, and appropriate level of premium. Inaccurate, incomplete, or outdated information may result in incorrect risk classification and premium rates that do not adequately reflect the underlying risk. The study examines the effect of underwriting information accuracy on premium rating. It will assess how the accuracy, completeness, consistency, and reliability of information obtained during underwriting influence the determination of insurance premiums. The study will also examine whether inaccuracies in underwriting information contribute to differences between assessed risk and the premiums ultimately charged to policyholders. The study will consider factors such as accuracy of policyholder information, completeness of risk details, claims history, asset characteristics, coverage information, risk classification, and premium rates. Statistical techniques including descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, regression analysis, and comparative analysis will be applied to examine the relationship between underwriting information accuracy and premium rating. Actuarial principles of risk assessment and premium determination will also be considered. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Historical underwriting and insurance policy data containing information on risk characteristics, policy details, claims experience, and premium ratings will be collected and analysed over a specified period. Descriptive statistics will be used to assess information quality and premium patterns, while correlation and regression techniques will be applied to determine the extent to which underwriting information accuracy influences premium rating. The study is expected to reveal that higher levels of underwriting information accuracy are associated with more appropriate and consistent premium ratings. Accurate information is expected to improve risk classification and enable insurers to assign premiums that better reflect expected claims exposure. Conversely, inaccurate or incomplete information may contribute to inappropriate premium ratings, potentially resulting in underpricing or overpricing of insurance risks. The findings are expected to be useful to insurance companies, actuaries, underwriters, pricing analysts, regulators, and policyholders. Improving the accuracy of underwriting information may support better risk assessment, premium adequacy, underwriting decisions, and portfolio management. The findings may also encourage insurers to strengthen information verification procedures and improve the quality of data used in premium rating models. The study concludes that the accuracy of underwriting information is an important determinant of effective and reliable premium rating. It is therefore recommended that insurers establish strong information verification procedures and regularly review the quality of underwriting data used for pricing decisions. Improving the accuracy and completeness of underwriting information may enhance pricing accuracy, reduce misclassification of risks, strengthen premium adequacy, and support sustainable insurance operations.
