Effect of Trade Credit Limits on Credit Insurance Exposure
Abstract
Trade credit limits represent the maximum amount of credit extended to buyers under agreed commercial arrangements and are an important consideration in the management of trade credit risk. In credit insurance, the level of credit granted to buyers can influence the amount of financial exposure assumed by insurers when insured buyers fail to meet their payment obligations. Appropriate assessment of trade credit limits is therefore important for controlling potential claim liabilities and maintaining sound risk management practices. The study examines the effect of trade credit limits on credit insurance exposure. It will assess how variations in the amount of credit granted to buyers influence the financial exposure of credit insurers and examine the relationship between approved credit limits, insured receivables, buyer default experience, and potential claim obligations. The study will also consider how credit limit levels affect the concentration and distribution of insured credit risk. The study will focus on trade credit limits, credit insurance exposure, insured receivables, buyer creditworthiness, credit limits, default risk, claim frequency, claim severity, outstanding invoices, credit concentration, and potential insurance liabilities. Historical data relating to insured buyers, approved credit limits, invoice values, payment records, defaults, and insurance claims will be examined using relevant actuarial and statistical techniques to evaluate patterns of credit exposure. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be obtained from relevant trade credit insurance records, including approved credit limits, insured transaction values, buyer payment histories, claims records, and outstanding credit exposures. Descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, regression analysis, exposure measurement, and loss analysis will be used to examine the relationship between trade credit limits and credit insurance exposure. The study is expected to reveal that higher trade credit limits may increase the potential financial exposure of credit insurers, particularly where large credit amounts are concentrated among buyers with elevated default risk. It is also expected that variations in credit limits, buyer payment behaviour, invoice concentration, and recovery rates may contribute to differences in aggregate insurance exposure and potential claims liabilities. The findings may provide useful information to actuaries, credit insurers, underwriters, credit managers, and risk management professionals. The study may support improved credit limit assessment, exposure monitoring, underwriting decisions, premium estimation, and claims risk management. It may also assist insurers in identifying excessive credit concentrations and developing more appropriate approaches to controlling insured credit exposure. The study concludes that trade credit limits constitute an important factor in determining the level of credit insurance exposure. It is therefore recommended that credit insurers regularly review approved credit limits, monitor buyer credit conditions, and incorporate historical default and claims experience into exposure assessment models. Effective management of credit limits may contribute to more accurate loss estimation and improved control of trade credit insurance risk.
