Effect of Negative Binomial Models on Insurance Claim Frequency Forecasts

Abstract

Negative binomial models are statistical models used to analyse count data where the observed frequency of events may exhibit greater variability than can be adequately represented by simpler count models. In insurance, claim frequency represents the number of claims arising from a specified exposure period, making accurate frequency forecasting important for premium determination, reserve estimation, and risk management. The application of negative binomial models can provide a useful approach for modelling variations in insurance claim counts. The study examines the effect of negative binomial models on insurance claim frequency forecasts. It will assess how the application of negative binomial modelling influences the estimation and forecasting of future insurance claim frequencies. The study will also examine the relationship between historical claim counts, exposure levels, frequency patterns, model estimates, and projected claim frequencies. The study will focus on insurance claim counts, exposure units, claim frequency, overdispersion, frequency trends, and forecast values. Negative binomial regression techniques will be applied to historical insurance claims data to estimate claim frequency and generate forecasts for future periods. The study will further assess the differences between observed claim frequencies and model-based forecasts under varying claims experience. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant insurance claims data, including historical claim counts, exposure levels, policy periods, claim frequencies, and other available frequency-related information, will be considered. Descriptive statistics, frequency analysis, negative binomial regression, model estimation, goodness-of-fit assessment, and forecast error analysis will be used to examine the effect of negative binomial models on insurance claim frequency forecasts. The study is expected to show that negative binomial models can provide useful forecasts of insurance claim frequency, particularly where claim counts display substantial variation. The model may produce estimates that reflect differences between expected and observed claim frequencies and provide information about the uncertainty surrounding future claim counts. Forecast accuracy may vary according to the quality of historical claims data, exposure levels, and stability of claims experience. The study is expected to provide useful information for actuaries, insurance companies, underwriters, claims managers, and financial analysts. The findings may support insurance pricing, claims forecasting, reserve estimation, portfolio risk assessment, and financial planning. The study may also assist insurers in selecting appropriate statistical techniques for modelling and forecasting claim frequency. The study concludes that negative binomial models provide a useful statistical framework for forecasting insurance claim frequency where claim-count variability is substantial. It is therefore recommended that insurance companies assess the characteristics of their claims data and apply appropriate negative binomial modelling techniques to improve claim frequency forecasts and support actuarial decision-making.
