Abstract

The study examines the effect of longevity improvements on annuity valuation, focusing on how increasing life expectancy influences the financial valuation of annuity contracts. Longevity improvements have become an important consideration in actuarial and insurance practice because individuals are increasingly living longer than previously projected. Since annuities provide regular payments over the lifetime of policyholders, longer survival periods can increase the duration and total amount of expected benefit payments. Understanding the effect of longevity improvements is therefore essential for accurate annuity valuation and effective financial planning. The study considers how changes in mortality and survival patterns affect the valuation of annuity contracts. Improvements in longevity can reduce mortality rates and increase the probability that annuitants will survive to receive payments for longer periods. These changes may increase the present value of expected future annuity payments and create additional financial obligations for insurers and pension providers. The study therefore examines the importance of incorporating updated mortality and longevity assumptions into actuarial valuation processes. The study further investigates the relationship between longevity improvements and annuity pricing and reserves. Accurate valuation requires insurers to estimate the expected duration of future payments while considering appropriate mortality assumptions and discount rates. If longevity improvements are not adequately reflected in valuation models, insurers may underestimate their future liabilities and face increased financial and solvency risks. The study therefore focuses on how changes in longevity assumptions can influence annuity values, pricing decisions, and the adequacy of financial reserves. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant mortality, survival, and annuity data will be analysed to assess the effect of longevity improvements on selected annuity valuation measures. Descriptive and inferential statistical techniques will be employed to examine changes in survival patterns and their implications for annuity values. Actuarial valuation procedures will also be applied to provide evidence on how adjustments in longevity assumptions may influence expected future payments and financial obligations. The study is expected to find that improvements in longevity have a significant effect on annuity valuation. Increased life expectancy is expected to extend the period over which annuity payments are made, thereby increasing the present value of expected future benefits. The findings are also expected to show that failure to account adequately for improvements in longevity may result in inaccurate valuation of annuity liabilities and inadequate financial provision for future payments. The study is further expected to establish that regular monitoring of longevity trends can improve the accuracy and reliability of annuity valuation. Updating mortality assumptions and incorporating emerging survival patterns into actuarial models may enable insurers and pension providers to better estimate future obligations. This may also support more appropriate annuity pricing, reserve determination, and long-term financial risk management. The study concludes that longevity improvements are an important factor in annuity valuation because they directly influence the expected duration and financial cost of annuity payments. It is therefore recommended that insurers, pension providers, and actuarial professionals regularly review mortality and longevity assumptions used in annuity valuation models. Appropriate consideration of longevity improvements can enhance valuation accuracy, strengthen financial planning, improve risk management, and contribute to the long-term sustainability of annuity products.
