Effect of Insurance Policy Features on Actuarial Premium Valuation
Abstract
The study examines the effect of insurance policy features on actuarial premium valuation. Actuarial premium valuation is an important process in insurance because it determines the amount of premium required to adequately cover expected future benefits, expenses, and other financial obligations associated with an insurance contract. Insurance policies contain different features that can influence the timing, frequency, and magnitude of expected cash flows. Understanding how these features affect actuarial premium valuation is therefore essential for accurate premium determination and effective insurance risk management. The study will investigate how selected insurance policy features influence the valuation of actuarially determined premiums. Particular attention will be given to policy duration, benefit amounts, premium payment frequency, waiting periods, deductibles, coverage limits, and benefit periods. The study will examine the extent to which changes in these features affect the actuarial present value of expected benefits and the resulting premium requirements. The study will apply actuarial valuation techniques to assess the financial implications of different policy structures. Mortality or claim assumptions, interest rate assumptions, expected benefit payments, and relevant policy characteristics will be incorporated into the valuation process. Comparative calculations will be performed under alternative policy feature scenarios to determine how changes in individual features influence the estimated actuarial premium. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Hypothetical or secondary insurance data will be used to construct representative policy scenarios with varying features. Actuarial present value techniques, probability models, life tables where applicable, discounting procedures, and comparative analysis will be used to estimate premiums under the different scenarios. The results will be evaluated to identify the policy features that produce noticeable changes in actuarial premium values. The study is expected to reveal that variations in insurance policy features can produce significant differences in actuarial premium valuation. Longer policy durations, higher benefit amounts, broader coverage limits, and more frequent benefit payments are expected to increase the financial obligations reflected in premium calculations, while features such as deductibles and waiting periods may reduce expected claim costs under certain insurance arrangements. The magnitude of these effects is expected to depend on the interaction between policy characteristics and the underlying actuarial assumptions. The study will provide useful information for actuaries, insurance companies, underwriters, regulators, and researchers by demonstrating how policy design can influence premium requirements. The findings may assist insurance practitioners in evaluating policy structures, developing appropriate premium rates, and maintaining consistency between policy benefits and expected financial obligations. The study may also support improved understanding of the relationship between contract design and actuarial valuation among students and practitioners of actuarial science. The study concludes that insurance policy features constitute important considerations in actuarial premium valuation because changes in contract structure can alter expected insurance cash flows and premium requirements. It is therefore recommended that insurers incorporate relevant policy characteristics carefully into actuarial valuation models and regularly review premium assumptions when policy features change. Appropriate actuarial techniques should be applied to ensure that premium calculations remain consistent with the benefits, risks, and financial obligations associated with insurance contracts.
