Effect of Insurance Experience Period Selection on Premium Rate Stability

Abstract

Insurance experience period selection refers to the choice of the historical period used by insurers and actuaries when analysing past claims and exposure experience for premium rating purposes. The selected experience period provides the data used to estimate expected losses and determine appropriate premium rates. The length and characteristics of the selected period may therefore influence the consistency and stability of insurance premium rates. This study will examine the effect of insurance experience period selection on premium rate stability. It will assess how the use of different historical experience periods influences the consistency of premium rates and the resulting estimates of insurance risk. The study will also compare premium rate outcomes obtained from alternative experience periods to determine the extent to which historical data selection affects premium rate fluctuations. The study will focus on experience period selection, premium rate stability, historical claims experience, exposure periods, claim frequency, claim severity, loss experience, premium rates, actuarial pricing, and insurance risk assessment. Different experience periods will be examined in relation to changes in claims experience and exposure characteristics. Actuarial and statistical techniques will be applied to evaluate variations in premium rates under alternative experience period selections. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Historical insurance claims, exposure, premium, and loss experience data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, loss ratio analysis, trend analysis, claim frequency and severity analysis, premium rate comparison, and sensitivity analysis. Alternative experience periods will be selected and compared to determine their effects on premium rate stability and the consistency of actuarial pricing estimates. The study is expected to reveal that the selection of an insurance experience period may have a significant effect on premium rate stability. Short experience periods may produce greater fluctuations when unusual claims events occur, while longer periods may provide more stable estimates but may include historical conditions that differ from current risk conditions. The magnitude of the effect may depend on claims volatility, exposure changes, portfolio characteristics, data quality, and the length of the experience period selected. The study will be useful to actuaries, insurance companies, pricing analysts, underwriters, risk managers, regulators, and insurance researchers. It may provide useful information for selecting appropriate experience periods, improving premium rate stability, strengthening actuarial pricing practices, and reducing excessive fluctuations in insurance rates. The findings may also support insurers in developing more consistent and evidence-based premium rating procedures. The study concludes that experience period selection is an important consideration in maintaining stable and reliable insurance premium rates because historical data forms a major basis for actuarial pricing decisions. It is therefore recommended that insurers carefully evaluate the relevance and length of historical experience periods, consider changes in claims and exposure patterns, and conduct sensitivity analysis before adopting premium rates for insurance products.
