Effect of Guaranteed Benefits on Life Insurance Premium Determination

Abstract

Life insurance products often include guaranteed benefits that provide policyholders with predetermined financial payments or minimum benefit levels under specified contractual conditions. These guarantees provide greater certainty to policyholders but can increase the financial obligations assumed by insurers. The presence and value of guaranteed benefits can therefore influence the actuarial assessment of future cash flows, risk exposure, and the premiums required to maintain the financial sustainability of life insurance contracts. This study examines the effect of guaranteed benefits on life insurance premium determination. The study will assess how different guaranteed benefit levels influence the calculation of life insurance premiums and the expected financial obligations of insurers. It will also examine how guaranteed benefits affect premium estimates under different mortality, interest rate, and policy duration assumptions. The study will focus on guaranteed features such as minimum death benefits, guaranteed maturity benefits, guaranteed cash values, and other predetermined contractual payments. Actuarial present values of guaranteed benefits will be estimated using appropriate mortality and interest rate assumptions. The study will then determine how changes in guaranteed benefit levels affect expected liabilities, risk premiums, and overall life insurance premium rates. A quantitative research approach will be adopted using representative life insurance contract data and relevant actuarial assumptions. Life table functions and actuarial present value techniques will be used to estimate expected future benefits and premiums. Scenario and sensitivity analyses will be conducted to examine the effect of changes in guaranteed benefit levels, mortality rates, interest rates, and policy terms on premium determination. The study is expected to reveal that higher guaranteed benefit levels generally result in higher actuarial liabilities and consequently higher premium requirements. The findings may also show that the effect of guaranteed benefits on premium determination varies according to policy duration, mortality assumptions, and prevailing interest rate conditions. Contracts with substantial guaranteed benefits may require greater premium contributions to provide sufficient funds for future obligations. The study will provide useful information for actuaries, life insurance companies, regulators, and policy designers involved in the development and pricing of life insurance products. Understanding the financial implications of guaranteed benefits may support more accurate premium estimation, liability management, reserve determination, and product design. The findings may also assist insurers in balancing attractive guaranteed benefits with sustainable premium structures. The study concludes that guaranteed benefits are an important factor in determining life insurance premiums because they directly influence the expected value of future contractual obligations. It is therefore recommended that insurers and actuaries incorporate the full actuarial cost of guaranteed benefits into premium calculations while testing the sensitivity of premiums to changes in mortality and interest rate assumptions. Appropriate valuation of guaranteed benefits may improve pricing accuracy and support the long-term financial sustainability of life insurance products.
