Effect of Fulfilment Cash Flow Estimates on Insurance Contract Valuation
Abstract
Fulfilment cash flows are a fundamental component of insurance contract valuation because they represent estimates of the future cash inflows and outflows associated with fulfilling insurance obligations. These estimates incorporate expected premiums, claims, benefits, expenses, and other relevant cash flows over the duration of an insurance contract. The accuracy of fulfilment cash flow estimates is therefore important for producing reliable measurements of insurance contract values and liabilities. This study examines the effect of fulfilment cash flow estimates on insurance contract valuation. The study will assess how changes in estimated future cash flows influence the measurement of insurance contracts and the financial obligations recognized by insurers. It will focus on how variations in expected cash flow assumptions affect the present value and overall valuation of insurance contracts. The study will consider factors such as expected claims, premium inflows, claims frequency, claims severity, administrative expenses, acquisition costs, policy duration, discount rates, and the timing of future cash flows. These factors will be examined to determine how changes in fulfilment cash flow estimates affect the value of insurance contracts and the associated insurance liabilities. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant insurance contract, claims, premium, and expense data will be analysed using actuarial valuation techniques, present value calculations, cash flow projection methods, scenario analysis, and sensitivity analysis. Alternative assumptions for future cash flows will be applied to assess their effects on estimated insurance contract values and liability measurements. The study is expected to reveal that changes in fulfilment cash flow estimates may have a significant effect on insurance contract valuation. Higher expected claims, expenses, or other future outflows may increase the estimated value of insurance obligations, while higher expected premium inflows may reduce the net liability position. The findings may also indicate that the effect of cash flow assumptions is more pronounced for long-duration contracts and contracts with substantial uncertainty surrounding future payments. The study will be useful to actuaries, insurance companies, accountants, financial analysts, auditors, regulators, and other stakeholders involved in insurance contract valuation and financial reporting. It may provide useful information for improving cash flow estimation, strengthening actuarial valuation practices, assessing insurance liabilities, and enhancing the reliability and transparency of insurance financial statements. The study concludes that fulfilment cash flow estimates are an important determinant of insurance contract valuation because changes in expected future cash inflows and outflows can materially affect measured contract values and insurance liabilities. It is therefore recommended that insurers use reliable claims and premium data, apply appropriate actuarial projection techniques, regularly update cash flow assumptions, and conduct sensitivity analysis to improve the accuracy of insurance contract valuation.
