Effect of Electricity Price Volatility on Energy Insurance Risk Estimates
Abstract
Electricity price volatility refers to the degree to which electricity prices fluctuate over time as a result of changes in demand, supply conditions, fuel prices, generation capacity, market conditions, and other economic factors. It is an important consideration in energy insurance because fluctuations in electricity prices can affect the financial performance and risk exposure of energy producers and operators. Changes in electricity prices may therefore influence the estimation of risks associated with insured energy assets and operations. This study will examine the effect of electricity price volatility on energy insurance risk estimates. It will assess how variations in electricity prices influence the estimated level of risk associated with energy insurance portfolios. The study will also analyse the relationship between electricity price movements and insurance risk estimates to determine the extent to which price volatility contributes to uncertainty in energy-related insurance exposures. The study will focus on electricity price volatility, energy insurance risk estimates, energy insurance, electricity markets, energy asset values, revenue exposure, operational risk, financial risk, loss exposure, risk assessment, price fluctuations, insurance claims, and actuarial modelling. Historical electricity price and energy insurance data will be examined to identify patterns of price volatility and their relationship with estimated insurance risks. Statistical and actuarial techniques will be applied to evaluate the implications of electricity price movements for energy insurance risk assessment. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Historical data on electricity prices, energy production, insured asset values, insurance claims, operating revenues, loss experience, and relevant market conditions will be analysed using descriptive statistics, volatility analysis, time series analysis, correlation analysis, regression analysis, risk modelling, comparative analysis, and sensitivity analysis. Alternative electricity price volatility scenarios will be incorporated into risk estimation models to determine their effects on estimated energy insurance risks. The study is expected to reveal that electricity price volatility may have a significant effect on energy insurance risk estimates. Higher price volatility may increase uncertainty surrounding energy revenues and asset-related exposures, potentially resulting in higher estimated risk levels, while more stable electricity prices may reduce certain sources of financial uncertainty. The magnitude of the effect may depend on the structure of the electricity market, energy production levels, asset values, revenue exposure, contract arrangements, claim experience, and prevailing operating conditions. The study will be useful to actuaries, energy insurers, underwriters, energy producers, financial analysts, risk managers, regulators, investment managers, and researchers. It may provide useful information for evaluating energy market risks, improving insurance risk estimation, developing appropriate underwriting assumptions, forecasting potential losses, and strengthening risk management practices within the energy insurance sector. The study concludes that electricity price volatility is an important consideration in energy insurance risk estimation because fluctuations in electricity prices can influence the financial exposure and uncertainty associated with energy-related assets and operations. It is therefore recommended that insurers monitor electricity price movements, incorporate appropriate volatility measures into risk models, regularly update market assumptions, and conduct sensitivity analysis to support more reliable energy insurance risk estimates.
