Effect of Dividend Yield Assumptions on Insurer Investment Income
Abstract
Dividend yield assumptions represent estimates of the income expected from equity investments based on dividends relative to the market value of the underlying securities. Insurance companies may invest part of their funds in dividend-paying equities to generate investment income and support their overall financial obligations. The accuracy of dividend yield assumptions is therefore important because variations in expected dividend income can influence projected investment returns and financial planning. The study examines the effect of dividend yield assumptions on insurer investment income. It will assess how changes in assumed dividend yields influence the estimated investment income generated from equity holdings. The study will also examine the relationship between dividend yield assumptions, equity portfolio values, dividend payments, investment returns, and the resulting level of insurer investment income. The study will focus on dividend yield assumptions, equity investment values, dividend income, equity portfolio composition, investment periods, and insurer investment returns. Investment valuation and sensitivity analysis techniques will be applied to estimate investment income under alternative dividend yield assumptions. The study will further assess the extent to which changes in dividend yield assumptions affect projected investment income. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant insurance and financial data, including historical dividend yields, equity portfolio values, dividend payments, investment income, and market values of equity investments, will be considered. Descriptive statistics, trend analysis, correlation analysis, regression analysis, and sensitivity analysis will be used to examine the effect of dividend yield assumptions on insurer investment income. The study is expected to show that changes in dividend yield assumptions can produce corresponding changes in projected insurer investment income. Higher assumed dividend yields may result in higher estimated dividend income, while lower assumptions may reduce projected investment income. The magnitude of the effect may vary according to the size and composition of the insurer’s equity portfolio, prevailing market conditions, and the stability of dividend payments. The study is expected to provide useful information for insurers, actuaries, investment managers, financial analysts, and other stakeholders involved in insurance investment management. The findings may support investment income forecasting, portfolio valuation, financial planning, asset allocation, and assessment of investment return expectations. The study may also assist insurers in evaluating the reliability of dividend yield assumptions used in investment projections. The study concludes that dividend yield assumptions are an important consideration in estimating insurer investment income. It is therefore recommended that insurance companies regularly review dividend yield assumptions using relevant historical and market information and apply sensitivity analysis to evaluate the potential effects of changes in expected dividend yields on investment income.
