Effect of Disability Duration Distributions on Insurance Reserve Values
Abstract
Disability duration distributions describe the pattern and probability of different periods for which insured individuals remain disabled and continue to receive insurance benefits. They are important actuarial inputs in disability insurance because the length of time a claim remains active directly influences the amount and timing of benefit payments. The choice and accuracy of disability duration assumptions may therefore have a significant effect on the reserves required to meet future disability insurance obligations. This study will examine the effect of disability duration distributions on insurance reserve values. It will assess how variations in the distribution of disability claim durations influence the estimated value of future benefit payments and the reserves established by insurers. The study will also compare reserve estimates under alternative disability duration distributions to determine the extent to which differences in assumed claim durations affect insurance reserve requirements. The study will focus on disability duration distributions, insurance reserve values, disability insurance, claim duration, disability claims, benefit payments, claim termination, recovery rates, mortality rates, actuarial reserves, future insurance liabilities, and actuarial valuation. Relevant disability claims and duration data will be examined to identify patterns in the length of disability claims and their implications for reserve estimation. Actuarial techniques will be applied to evaluate the effect of alternative duration distributions on insurance reserves. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data relating to disability claim durations, benefit amounts, disability incidence rates, recovery rates, mortality rates, claim termination patterns, insured income, policy terms, and discount rates will be analysed using descriptive statistics, duration analysis, probability distribution modelling, actuarial present value calculations, reserve estimation, comparative analysis, and sensitivity analysis. Alternative disability duration distributions will be incorporated into actuarial reserve models to determine their effects on estimated reserve values. The study is expected to reveal that disability duration distributions may have a significant effect on insurance reserve values. Distributions reflecting longer claim durations may result in higher expected future benefit payments and consequently higher reserve requirements, while distributions reflecting shorter durations may produce lower reserve values. The magnitude of the effect may depend on benefit amounts, claim frequency, recovery rates, mortality rates, policy duration, discount rates, and the shape of the selected duration distribution. The study will be useful to actuaries, insurance companies, reserving specialists, underwriters, claims managers, pricing analysts, risk managers, regulators, and researchers. It may provide useful information for selecting appropriate disability duration distributions, improving reserve estimation, projecting future benefit payments, and strengthening actuarial liability management. The findings may also assist insurers in evaluating the financial implications of alternative assumptions about the duration of disability claims. The study concludes that disability duration distributions are important considerations in insurance reserve valuation because the assumed duration of disability claims directly affects the timing and amount of future benefit payments. It is therefore recommended that insurers regularly analyse disability claims experience, select appropriate duration distributions, update actuarial assumptions when necessary, and conduct sensitivity analysis to support accurate and sustainable insurance reserve estimation.
