Effect of Cybersecurity Investment Levels on Cyber Insurance Risk Pricing

Abstract

Cyber insurance provides financial protection against losses arising from cyber-related incidents such as data breaches, ransomware attacks, system disruptions, and other forms of digital risk. The level of investment made by an organisation in cybersecurity can influence its exposure to cyber threats and the potential financial consequences of cyber incidents. Consequently, variations in cybersecurity investment may affect the assessment and pricing of cyber insurance risk. This study examines the effect of cybersecurity investment levels on cyber insurance risk pricing. It will investigate how differences in the amount of resources devoted to cybersecurity influence the determination of insurance premiums and the assessment of cyber risk. The study will consider varying levels of cybersecurity investment and evaluate their implications for expected losses and cyber insurance pricing. The study will focus on factors such as cybersecurity investment, cyber incident frequency, claim frequency, claim severity, data protection measures, security infrastructure, system vulnerabilities, risk exposure, incident response capabilities, and insurance coverage limits. Actuarial and statistical techniques will be applied to estimate expected cyber losses under different cybersecurity investment levels. Particular attention will be given to the relationship between cybersecurity expenditure and the financial risk assumed by cyber insurers. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant cybersecurity investment information and cyber insurance claims data will be analysed using appropriate actuarial and statistical methods. Descriptive statistics, regression analysis, probability models, loss distribution techniques, and comparative analysis will be employed to examine variations in risk pricing across different levels of cybersecurity investment. The study is expected to show that higher cybersecurity investment levels may be associated with lower expected cyber losses where stronger security measures reduce the frequency or severity of cyber incidents. This may influence the risk characteristics considered in cyber insurance pricing. The findings may also indicate that the relationship between cybersecurity investment and premiums depends on the effectiveness of security controls, historical claims experience, system vulnerabilities, and the financial magnitude of cyber incidents. The study is expected to provide useful information for actuaries, cyber insurance companies, businesses, cybersecurity professionals, risk managers, and insurance brokers. Understanding the relationship between cybersecurity investment and risk pricing can support more accurate risk assessment, premium determination, underwriting, claims forecasting, and cyber risk management. It may also assist insurers in incorporating measurable cybersecurity characteristics into actuarial pricing models. The study concludes that cybersecurity investment levels are an important consideration in cyber insurance risk pricing because they can influence the degree of exposure to cyber incidents and the potential cost of insured losses. It is therefore recommended that insurers incorporate relevant cybersecurity investment measures, security controls, claims experience, and cyber risk indicators into pricing models. Appropriate actuarial and statistical techniques should be applied to ensure that cyber insurance premiums adequately reflect the expected level of cyber risk.
