Effect of Construction Site Characteristics on Contractors’ Insurance Premiums
Abstract
Contractors’ insurance provides financial protection against risks that may arise during construction activities, including property damage, accidents, injuries, and third-party liabilities. Construction sites differ in their physical and operational characteristics, which can influence the level of risk faced by contractors and insurers. Accurate assessment of these characteristics is therefore important for determining appropriate insurance premiums and ensuring adequate pricing of construction-related risks. This study will examine the effect of construction site characteristics on contractors’ insurance premiums. It will assess how differences in construction site conditions and operational features influence the premiums charged for contractors’ insurance coverage. The study will also examine the extent to which variations in site characteristics affect the expected frequency and severity of insured losses. The study will focus on construction site characteristics, contractors’ insurance premiums, project size, construction site location, project duration, building height, construction activities, site conditions, claim frequency, and claim severity. Actuarial and statistical techniques will be applied to assess how these characteristics influence expected insurance losses and premium valuation. Different categories of construction sites will be considered in estimating the financial implications of construction-related risks. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant contractors’ insurance claims data, construction project information, site characteristics, premium records, loss amounts, and exposure measures will be analysed using descriptive statistics, claim frequency and severity analysis, regression techniques, and actuarial loss estimation methods. Comparative analysis will be conducted across different construction site characteristics to determine their effects on insurance premiums. The study is expected to reveal that differences in construction site characteristics may influence contractors’ insurance premiums. Sites involving greater physical complexity, larger project sizes, longer construction periods, or higher operational exposure may be associated with greater expected losses and consequently higher premiums. The magnitude of the effect may vary according to the specific characteristics of the construction project and the historical claims experience associated with similar risks. The study will be useful to actuaries, construction insurers, contractors, underwriters, project managers, insurance regulators, and researchers. It may provide useful information for improving construction risk assessment and developing more appropriate premium structures for contractors’ insurance. The findings may also support better underwriting decisions, loss estimation, risk classification, and insurance portfolio management. The study concludes that construction site characteristics constitute important factors in the actuarial assessment of contractors’ insurance premiums. It is therefore recommended that insurers systematically evaluate relevant site characteristics and incorporate reliable exposure information, claims experience, and appropriate actuarial models when determining premiums for contractors’ insurance policies.
