Abstract
Subrogation recovery rates represent the proportion of claim payments that an insurer is able to recover from responsible third parties after compensating policyholders for insured property losses. Subrogation provides insurers with an opportunity to recover part of the amounts paid on claims and thereby reduce their net loss exposure. The level of recovery achieved can therefore influence the estimation of ultimate property insurance losses and is relevant to actuarial reserving and claims management. This study will examine the effect of subrogation recovery rates on ultimate property insurance losses. It will assess how variations in the proportion of recoverable claim amounts influence the final losses incurred by property insurers. The study will also compare ultimate loss estimates under different subrogation recovery rates and determine the extent to which successful third-party recoveries reduce the net financial burden associated with property insurance claims. The study will focus on subrogation recovery rates, ultimate property insurance losses, property insurance claims, third-party recoveries, claim payments, recovery amounts, loss severity, outstanding claims, net claim costs, claims settlement, recovery processes, actuarial reserving, loss estimation, and property insurance risk. Relevant property insurance claims and subrogation recovery data will be analysed to identify patterns in recovery rates and their relationship with ultimate losses. Actuarial and statistical techniques will be applied to evaluate the financial implications of different recovery rates. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Historical property insurance claims, claim payments, subrogation recoveries, recovery rates, assessed property losses, outstanding claims, and ultimate loss estimates will be analysed. The magnitude of the effect may depend on claim severity, recovery amounts, legal processes, responsible-party identification, property loss characteristics, and the efficiency of subrogation procedures. The study will be useful to actuaries, property insurance companies, claims managers, underwriters, loss adjusters, risk managers, financial managers, brokers, regulators, and researchers. The study concludes that subrogation recovery rates are important considerations in estimating ultimate property insurance losses because successful recoveries can reduce the net cost of claims borne by insurers. It is therefore recommended that insurers maintain accurate subrogation records, monitor recovery performance, incorporate realistic recovery rate assumptions into actuarial models, and conduct sensitivity analysis to improve ultimate loss estimation and strengthen property insurance claims management.
