Effect of Claims Experience Periods on General Insurance Pricing Estimates

Abstract

Claims experience periods represent the length of historical claims data used by insurers and actuaries when estimating future insurance risks and premiums. The selection of an appropriate experience period can influence the representation of claim frequency, claim severity, loss trends, and emerging risk patterns in actuarial pricing models. Differences in the length of historical experience considered may therefore produce variations in general insurance pricing estimates. This study will examine the effect of claims experience periods on general insurance pricing estimates. It will assess how different historical experience periods influence estimated claim costs and premium levels. The study will also examine whether the use of shorter or longer claims experience periods produces differences in the assessment of underlying insurance risk and projected pricing outcomes. The study will focus on claims experience periods, general insurance pricing, premium estimates, claim frequency, claim severity, historical claims data, loss trends, exposure data, risk assessment, and actuarial pricing. Different claims experience periods will be applied to historical insurance data to estimate relevant pricing parameters. Actuarial and statistical techniques will then be used to assess how variations in the selected experience period influence projected insurance premiums. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Historical general insurance policy, exposure, and claims data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, claim frequency and severity analysis, trend analysis, actuarial pricing techniques, parameter estimation, and sensitivity analysis. Premium estimates generated from different claims experience periods will be compared to determine their effects on estimated loss costs and pricing outcomes. The study is expected to reveal that claims experience periods may have a significant effect on general insurance pricing estimates. Shorter experience periods may place greater emphasis on recent claims patterns, while longer periods may incorporate a broader range of historical loss experience. The resulting differences in premium estimates may depend on changes in claims frequency, claim severity, exposure levels, inflation, and the stability of historical loss patterns. The study will be useful to actuaries, insurance companies, underwriters, pricing analysts, risk managers, regulators, and researchers. It may provide useful information for selecting appropriate claims experience periods, improving premium estimation, assessing historical loss trends, and strengthening general insurance pricing practices. The findings may also assist insurers in evaluating how the length of historical data used in pricing models affects estimated insurance risk. The study concludes that claims experience periods are important considerations in general insurance pricing because the length of historical data used can influence estimated loss costs and premium levels. It is therefore recommended that insurers and actuaries carefully evaluate the relevance, stability, and quality of available claims experience when selecting the period of historical data to be used for general insurance pricing estimates.
