Effect of Claim Closure Frequency on Ultimate Loss Estimates
Abstract
Claim closure frequency refers to the rate at which reported insurance claims are investigated, settled, and formally closed within a specified period. The pattern and speed of claim closures provide important information about the development of insurance losses and outstanding claim liabilities. Changes in claim closure frequency may therefore influence the amount of unresolved claims remaining in a portfolio and the actuarial estimation of ultimate losses. This study will examine the effect of claim closure frequency on ultimate loss estimates. It will assess how variations in the frequency of claim closures influence projected ultimate claims and outstanding loss estimates. The study will also compare ultimate loss estimates under different claim closure patterns to determine the extent to which changes in claims settlement and closure affect actuarial projections. The study will focus on claim closure frequency, ultimate loss estimates, claims settlement, outstanding claims, loss development, claim development patterns, claim frequency, claim severity, actuarial reserving, insurance liabilities, and claims management. Historical claims data will be examined to identify patterns in claim closures and determine how differences in closure frequency influence the development of reported and outstanding losses. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Historical insurance claims data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, claim closure rate analysis, claims development triangles, loss development factor analysis, chain-ladder techniques, ultimate loss estimation, correlation analysis, and sensitivity analysis. Alternative claim closure frequency scenarios will also be modelled to determine their effects on projected ultimate losses and outstanding claims liabilities. The study is expected to reveal that claim closure frequency may have a significant effect on ultimate loss estimates. Higher or more consistent claim closure frequencies may reduce the volume of unresolved claims and produce different loss development patterns from slower closure rates. The magnitude of the effect may depend on claim severity, settlement duration, reporting delays, claims development patterns, the proportion of reopened claims, and the quality and completeness of claims data. The study will be useful to actuaries, insurance companies, claims managers, reserving analysts, pricing analysts, risk managers, financial managers, regulators, and researchers. It may provide useful information for improving claims monitoring, strengthening ultimate loss estimation, enhancing reserve assessment, and supporting more reliable actuarial projections. The findings may also assist insurers in understanding how claim closure patterns influence outstanding liabilities and projected ultimate losses. The study concludes that claim closure frequency is an important consideration in ultimate loss estimation because the rate at which claims are closed can influence claims development patterns and the volume of outstanding liabilities. It is therefore recommended that insurers regularly monitor claim closure patterns, maintain accurate claims records, and apply appropriate actuarial reserving techniques and sensitivity analysis to improve the reliability of ultimate loss estimates.
