Effect of Aircraft Utilization Rates on Aviation Insurance Loss Frequency

Abstract

Aviation insurance provides financial protection against losses arising from aircraft operations, including accidents, damage, and other insured aviation risks. Aircraft utilization rates indicate the extent to which aircraft are operated over a given period and may influence the frequency of exposure to operational risks. Understanding the relationship between aircraft utilization and insurance loss frequency is therefore important for effective aviation risk assessment and actuarial planning. This study will examine the effect of aircraft utilization rates on aviation insurance loss frequency. It will assess how differences in the frequency and intensity of aircraft operations influence the occurrence of insured losses. The study will also examine variations in loss frequency across aircraft with different levels of operational utilization. The study will focus on aircraft utilization rates, aviation insurance loss frequency, flight hours, flight cycles, aircraft operations, accident occurrences, insured losses, and exposure levels. Actuarial and statistical techniques will be applied to determine the relationship between aircraft utilization and the frequency of aviation insurance losses. Exposure-based measures will be used to provide a more appropriate assessment of loss occurrence relative to aircraft operational activity. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant aviation insurance claims data, aircraft utilization records, flight hours, flight cycles, policy information, and exposure data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency analysis, Poisson or negative binomial regression techniques, and actuarial loss modelling methods. Different utilization levels will be examined to determine variations in the frequency of insured aviation losses. The study is expected to reveal that aircraft utilization rates may have a significant effect on aviation insurance loss frequency. Aircraft with higher utilization may experience greater exposure to operational risks and consequently record higher numbers of insured loss events. However, the relationship may vary according to aircraft type, operational conditions, flight hours, flight cycles, and historical claims experience. The study will be useful to aviation insurers, actuaries, aircraft operators, underwriters, aviation regulators, and researchers. It may provide useful information for improving exposure measurement and loss-frequency estimation in aviation insurance. The findings may also support more accurate premium assessment, risk classification, claims forecasting, and aviation insurance portfolio management. The study concludes that aircraft utilization rates are an important exposure measure in assessing aviation insurance loss frequency. It is therefore recommended that insurers incorporate reliable utilization data, flight hours, flight cycles, claims experience, and appropriate statistical and actuarial models when evaluating aviation insurance loss frequency.
