Relationship Between Anatomy Revision Methods and Practical Examination Performance

Abstract

The study examines the relationship between anatomy revision methods and practical examination performance among undergraduate students, with emphasis on how different approaches to reviewing anatomical knowledge may influence students’ ability to identify and interpret anatomical structures during practical examinations. Anatomy revision may involve the use of textbooks, anatomical atlases, lecture notes, flashcards, diagrams, anatomical models, specimens, digital resources, group discussions, and repeated practical exercises. The effectiveness and pattern of students’ revision practices may therefore influence their preparation and performance in practical anatomy assessments. The study will assess the anatomy revision methods commonly used by students and determine their practical examination performance. The specific objectives will include identifying the major revision methods used by students, determining the frequency and pattern of their anatomy revision, assessing students’ performance in practical anatomy examinations, examining the relationship between revision methods and practical examination performance, and identifying revision approaches commonly associated with difficulties in structure identification. The study will also assess students’ use of practical and visual resources during anatomy revision. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students studying human anatomy or related health science courses will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire on anatomy revision methods and a standardized practical anatomy assessment or relevant practical examination performance records. The data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate correlation or inferential statistical tests will be applied to determine the relationship between anatomy revision methods and practical examination performance. The study is expected to reveal variations in the revision methods used by students and differences in their practical examination performance. Students who engage regularly with practical and visual revision resources, including anatomical specimens, models, atlases, diagrams, and repeated structure identification exercises, may demonstrate stronger practical performance. However, students may continue to experience difficulty with small, closely related, deep, or visually similar structures that require detailed recognition and spatial understanding. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, curriculum planners, and health science educators involved in practical anatomy teaching and assessment. The study may provide useful information on students’ revision practices and their relevance to practical examination preparation. The findings may also support the development of effective anatomy revision programmes that combine theoretical review with practical identification, visual learning resources, repeated exposure, and active recall of anatomical structures. The study will conclude by determining the relationship between anatomy revision methods and practical examination performance among the study population. It is recommended that students should adopt structured revision approaches that provide adequate opportunities for practical identification and repeated review of anatomical structures. Further studies involving larger student populations and different anatomy learning environments are recommended to provide broader evidence on effective revision approaches for improving practical anatomy performance.
