Relationship Between Anatomy Laboratory Facilities and Practical Learning Experience

Abstract

The study examines the relationship between anatomy laboratory facilities and students’ practical learning experience among undergraduate students. Anatomy practical education depends on suitable laboratory facilities that provide students with opportunities to observe, handle, identify, and study human anatomical structures. Adequate facilities may include anatomical specimens, models, charts, atlases, dissection equipment, imaging resources, laboratory workspaces, and other instructional materials required for effective practical teaching. The availability and condition of these facilities may influence students’ participation, engagement, understanding, and overall experience during practical anatomy sessions. The specific objectives will include assessing the availability and adequacy of anatomy laboratory facilities, determining students’ practical learning experience, examining the relationship between available laboratory facilities and students’ engagement during practical sessions, and identifying areas of practical anatomy learning that may be affected by the adequacy of laboratory resources. Attention will be given to students’ access to anatomical specimens, models, practical equipment, visual materials, workspace, and other resources used during anatomy laboratory activities. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students enrolled in anatomy or related health science programmes will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to assess the availability and adequacy of anatomy laboratory facilities and students’ practical learning experiences. Practical learning experience will be assessed in areas such as student engagement, ease of anatomical structure identification, understanding of structural relationships, participation in practical activities, confidence during laboratory sessions, and satisfaction with available facilities. The data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while an appropriate correlation or inferential statistical test will be used to determine the relationship between laboratory facilities and practical learning experience. The study is expected to reveal a relationship between the adequacy of anatomy laboratory facilities and students’ practical learning experience. Students with greater access to appropriate specimens, models, equipment, visual resources, and suitable workspaces may report more positive practical learning experiences and greater engagement during laboratory sessions. However, challenges may remain where facilities are limited, poorly maintained, insufficient for the number of students, or not readily accessible during practical activities. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, medical educators, institutional administrators, curriculum planners, and other health science educators involved in practical anatomy education. The study may provide useful information on the role of laboratory facilities in supporting effective practical learning and students’ interaction with anatomical materials. It may also assist educational institutions in identifying areas where anatomy laboratory resources and facilities require improvement to create more supportive and effective practical learning environments. The study will conclude by determining the relationship between anatomy laboratory facilities and students’ practical learning experience. It is recommended that anatomy laboratories be adequately equipped, properly maintained, and provided with sufficient practical resources and appropriate learning spaces to support effective anatomy education, while further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations should be conducted to provide broader evidence on the relationship between laboratory resources and practical anatomy learning.
