Effect of Palpation Practice on Students’ Understanding of Underlying Anatomical Structures
Abstract
The study examines the effect of palpation practice on students’ understanding of underlying anatomical structures, with emphasis on how guided tactile exploration of the body surface can help students relate palpable features to structures located beneath the skin. Palpation provides an opportunity for students to explore anatomical landmarks, muscles, tendons, bones, joints, and other accessible structures through direct physical examination. This practical approach may strengthen students’ spatial understanding and improve their ability to connect surface features with deeper anatomical relationships. The study will assess students’ understanding of underlying anatomical structures before and after exposure to structured palpation practice. The specific objectives will include determining students’ baseline understanding of selected underlying structures, providing guided palpation activities for relevant anatomical regions, assessing students’ understanding following the practical sessions, and comparing their performance before and after the intervention. A quasi-experimental research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students will be selected using a suitable sampling technique and exposed to structured palpation practice under appropriate supervision. The practical activities will involve locating selected surface landmarks and tracing their relationship with underlying bones, muscles, tendons, joints, vessels, and other relevant structures using guided palpation, anatomical models, diagrams, and instructor demonstrations. Data will be collected using standardized practical and knowledge assessments and analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary. The study is expected to reveal improved understanding of underlying anatomical structures among students following exposure to palpation practice. Students may demonstrate greater ability to relate palpable landmarks to the position and relationships of underlying structures, particularly in regions with prominent and accessible anatomical features. Structures that are deep, small, closely related to surrounding tissues, or difficult to palpate may remain more challenging for some students. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, clinical skills instructors, medical students, physiotherapy students, nursing students, and other healthcare trainees involved in practical anatomy and physical examination. The study may provide useful information on the contribution of tactile learning to students’ spatial understanding of anatomy and may assist educators in designing practical activities that complement lectures, diagrams, models, and specimen-based teaching. The study will conclude by determining the effect of structured palpation practice on students’ understanding of underlying anatomical structures. It is recommended that supervised palpation activities should be incorporated into practical anatomy teaching, with appropriate attention to anatomical accuracy, student comfort, professional conduct, and instructor feedback. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations should be conducted to provide additional evidence on the effectiveness of palpation-based approaches in improving students’ understanding of three-dimensional anatomical relationships.
