Comparative Study of Concept Mapping and Note-Taking for Anatomy Learning

Abstract

The study compares concept mapping and note-taking for anatomy learning among undergraduate students, with emphasis on how the two learning approaches may influence students’ understanding and retention of anatomical information. Concept mapping involves organizing anatomical concepts into interconnected visual representations that show relationships between structures and ideas, while note-taking involves recording and organizing information from lectures, textbooks, and other learning materials. Comparing these approaches may provide useful information on their effectiveness for learning complex anatomical concepts. The study will compare students’ learning outcomes following the use of concept mapping and note-taking approaches. The specific objectives will include assessing students’ baseline anatomy knowledge, determining their performance following exposure to each learning approach, comparing their ability to recall anatomical terminology and identify structures, and assessing their understanding of relationships between anatomical structures. The study will also identify aspects of anatomy learning that may remain difficult for students using either approach. A comparative quasi-experimental research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students studying human anatomy or related health science courses will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique and assigned to concept mapping and note-taking groups. Data will be collected using standardized anatomy knowledge tests involving anatomical terminology, structure identification, and questions assessing structural relationships. Practical or image-based assessments may also be included to evaluate students’ ability to apply learned information. The data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential tests will be applied to compare the performance of the two groups. The study is expected to reveal differences in learning outcomes between students using concept mapping and those using note-taking. Concept mapping may support students’ understanding of relationships between anatomical structures and organization of complex information, while note-taking may support the recording and review of detailed anatomical facts and terminology. However, students may continue to experience difficulty with small, closely related, or spatially complex structures regardless of the learning approach used. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, curriculum planners, and health science educators involved in undergraduate anatomy teaching. The study may provide useful evidence on the comparative value of visual concept organization and conventional note-taking for anatomy learning. The findings may also support the integration of concept mapping and effective note-taking practices with practical demonstrations, anatomical specimens, models, diagrams, and other active learning resources. The study will conclude by comparing concept mapping and note-taking as approaches to anatomy learning among the study population. It is recommended that students should be encouraged to use learning approaches that promote both effective organization of anatomical information and understanding of structural relationships. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations and longer follow-up periods are recommended to determine the sustained effects of concept mapping and note-taking on anatomical knowledge retention and practical anatomy performance.
