Assessment of the Availability of Anatomical Specimens for Undergraduate Practical Classes

Abstract

The study examines the availability of anatomical specimens for undergraduate practical classes, with emphasis on the accessibility and adequacy of specimens used to support practical anatomy education. Anatomical specimens provide students with direct opportunities to observe, identify, and understand human anatomical structures and their spatial relationships. Adequate availability of appropriate specimens is therefore an important consideration in providing meaningful practical learning experiences and supporting the effective delivery of anatomy education. The study will assess the availability of anatomical specimens for undergraduate practical classes and determine the extent to which available specimens correspond with the requirements of the anatomy curriculum. The study will also examine the range of specimens available across different anatomical regions, their accessibility during practical sessions, and students’ perceptions of the adequacy of specimens for supporting identification, observation, and understanding of anatomical structures. A descriptive cross-sectional research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students participating in practical anatomy classes will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique, while relevant information on available anatomical specimens may also be obtained through laboratory observation and appropriate institutional records where accessible. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and specimen availability checklist. The data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary. The study is expected to reveal variations in the availability and accessibility of anatomical specimens across different practical anatomy sessions and anatomical regions. Some specimens may be sufficiently available for student observation and identification, while others may be limited in number, difficult to access, or insufficient for the number of students participating in practical classes. Differences may also be observed in students’ perceptions of specimen adequacy and the extent to which specimen availability supports their practical anatomy learning. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, laboratory instructors, academic administrators, and curriculum developers involved in undergraduate anatomy education. The study may provide information on existing specimen availability and identify areas where shortages or accessibility challenges may affect practical learning opportunities. The findings may also assist institutions in planning specimen acquisition, preservation, laboratory organization, and allocation of resources for anatomy practical classes. The study will conclude by documenting the availability and accessibility of anatomical specimens for undergraduate practical classes and identifying areas requiring improvement. It is recommended that anatomy laboratories maintain an adequate range of appropriately preserved specimens and develop effective systems for specimen allocation and practical class organization. Further studies involving multiple institutions and larger student populations are also recommended to provide broader information on anatomical specimen availability and its implications for practical anatomy education.
