Assessment of Students’ Knowledge of Anatomical Structures Relevant to Emergency Procedures

Abstract

The study assesses students’ knowledge of anatomical structures relevant to emergency procedures. Adequate knowledge of anatomy is important for understanding the location and relationships of structures that may be encountered during emergency interventions. Familiarity with major anatomical landmarks, blood vessels, nerves, airways, bones, and other clinically important structures may support appropriate decision-making and reduce the risk of injury during emergency care. The study will assess the level of students’ knowledge of anatomical structures that are relevant to common emergency procedures. The specific objectives will include determining students’ knowledge of important anatomical landmarks, assessing their ability to identify structures associated with emergency interventions, evaluating their understanding of the anatomical relationships between relevant structures, and identifying areas of anatomy that students find difficult to apply in emergency situations. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students who have received relevant anatomy instruction will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected using a structured and appropriately validated questionnaire and, where applicable, practical identification tasks involving anatomical specimens, models, diagrams, or clinical images. The data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge of anatomical structures relevant to emergency procedures. Students may demonstrate stronger knowledge of commonly taught anatomical landmarks and major structures, while greater difficulties may be observed in identifying structures located in complex anatomical regions or understanding their spatial relationships. Differences may also be observed between theoretical knowledge and practical identification of structures presented in clinical or emergency-related contexts. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, medical educators, emergency care instructors, and other health sciences professionals involved in undergraduate training. The study may help identify areas where students require additional anatomical demonstrations, practical identification exercises, clinical images, simulation-based activities, and emergency-oriented anatomy teaching. It may also provide information for strengthening the integration of anatomical knowledge with practical emergency care education. The study will conclude by assessing students’ knowledge of anatomical structures relevant to emergency procedures and identifying areas requiring further educational support. It is recommended that anatomy teaching should include clinically oriented examples and practical activities that enable students to relate anatomical structures to emergency procedures while maintaining appropriate educational and professional standards. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations are also recommended.
