Assessment of Students’ Ability to Distinguish Adjacent Anatomical Structures

Abstract

The study examines students’ ability to distinguish adjacent anatomical structures, with emphasis on their capacity to differentiate structures that are closely located, visually similar, or separated by small anatomical spaces. Accurate distinction between neighboring structures is an important component of anatomical learning because many bones, muscles, nerves, blood vessels, and organs share close relationships and may have similar appearances or overlapping positions. The ability to distinguish such structures is therefore essential for developing accurate spatial understanding and practical anatomical identification skills among undergraduate students. The study will assess students’ ability to identify and distinguish adjacent anatomical structures in selected regions of the human body. The specific objectives will include determining students’ accuracy in differentiating closely related structures, assessing their ability to use anatomical landmarks and structural relationships for identification, identifying anatomical regions where distinction is more difficult, and examining the students’ ability to distinguish similar structures across specimens, models, diagrams, or appropriate anatomical images. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students with relevant anatomy training will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and standardized practical or image-based identification tasks involving pairs or groups of adjacent anatomical structures. The data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential statistical tests will be applied where necessary. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of ability to distinguish adjacent anatomical structures among the students. Structures with clear differences in shape, size, location, or landmarks may be identified more accurately, while structures that are closely positioned, visually similar, small, or difficult to view from certain orientations may present greater challenges. Differences may also be observed in students’ ability to use surrounding anatomical relationships and landmarks when distinguishing between closely related structures. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, practical anatomy instructors, radiologists, and other healthcare educators involved in anatomical training and assessment. The study may provide useful information for identifying areas where students require additional practical exposure, comparative identification exercises, anatomical models, specimens, or image-based learning. Improving students’ ability to distinguish adjacent structures may also strengthen their spatial understanding and reduce errors during practical anatomical identification and clinically oriented anatomy learning. The study will conclude by documenting students’ ability to distinguish adjacent anatomical structures and identifying specific areas of difficulty in practical anatomical recognition. It is recommended that anatomy teaching should include structured comparative identification exercises that expose students to closely related and visually similar structures using specimens, models, diagrams, and appropriate imaging resources. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations should also be conducted to provide broader information on students’ practical anatomical identification abilities.
