Influence of Occupational Vision Screening on Visual Impairment Detection among Industrial Workers in Nigeria
Abstract
Visual impairment remains an important occupational and public health concern among industrial workers in Nigeria and may adversely affect workplace safety, productivity, job performance, mobility, and overall quality of life. Industrial workers may be exposed to occupational factors that can affect eye health, including dust, chemicals, fumes, intense light, radiation, flying particles, mechanical hazards, and prolonged visual demands. Repeated or prolonged exposure to such hazards may contribute to eye injuries, refractive errors, visual fatigue, and other conditions that may impair workers' vision. Some forms of visual impairment may develop gradually without obvious symptoms, resulting in delayed detection and continued exposure to workplace hazards. Undetected visual impairment may increase the risk of occupational accidents, reduced productivity, absenteeism, and long-term eye complications. Occupational vision screening provides an opportunity to identify visual problems among industrial workers through systematic workplace eye assessments, visual acuity testing, occupational eye-health examinations, and appropriate referral services. Early detection may facilitate corrective lenses, medical treatment, workplace modifications, appropriate eye protection, and specialist ophthalmic assessment. However, inadequate occupational health programmes, limited availability of trained eye-care personnel, insufficient screening equipment, irregular screening schedules, low worker awareness, and weak referral and follow-up systems may limit the effectiveness of occupational vision screening programmes in Nigeria. Against this background, this study investigates the influence of occupational vision screening on visual impairment detection among industrial workers in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Occupational Health Theory, the Health Belief Model, and the Health Systems Framework. Occupational Health Theory emphasizes the prevention, identification, monitoring, and management of workplace-related health risks and the promotion of workers' safety and well-being. The Health Belief Model explains how workers' perceptions of susceptibility to visual impairment, perceived severity, perceived benefits of screening, perceived barriers, and cues to action may influence participation in occupational vision screening. The Health Systems Framework emphasizes service delivery, health workforce, health information, medical products and technologies, financing, and accessibility as essential components of effective occupational eye-health and screening programmes. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how occupational vision screening may influence visual impairment detection among industrial workers in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative cross-sectional analytical or quasi-experimental research design. The study population will comprise industrial workers employed in selected manufacturing, construction, mining, processing, chemical, and other industrial facilities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, industrial areas, organizations, factories, departments, and eligible workers. Occupational vision screening will be measured using indicators such as availability of workplace vision screening services, screening coverage, frequency of visual assessments, visual acuity testing, occupational eye-risk assessment, availability of trained optometrists or other eye-care personnel, availability of vision screening equipment, workplace eye-health education, use of appropriate protective eyewear, and referral arrangements. Visual impairment detection will be assessed using indicators such as reduced visual acuity, refractive errors, abnormal visual assessment findings, suspected ocular conditions, newly identified visual impairment, severity of visual impairment, referrals for comprehensive eye examination, confirmed visual impairment following appropriate clinical assessment, and recommendations for corrective or medical intervention. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, occupational vision screening records, visual acuity assessment forms, occupational health records, optometric examination records, referral registers, and relevant organizational documents. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize workers' characteristics, occupational exposures, screening coverage, visual assessment findings, and patterns of visual impairment detection. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis, will be used to determine the influence of occupational vision screening on visual impairment detection. Where appropriate, visual impairment detection rates before and after implementation of occupational vision screening programmes may be compared to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that occupational vision screening has a significant positive influence on visual impairment detection among industrial workers in Nigeria. Industrial workers who participate in occupational vision screening are expected to have a higher likelihood of having previously undetected visual impairment identified than workers without access to routine workplace vision screening. Systematic visual assessment may facilitate early identification of reduced visual acuity, refractive errors, visual abnormalities, and other eye conditions requiring further evaluation. Early detection may provide opportunities for prescription of corrective lenses, medical treatment, specialist ophthalmic assessment, appropriate use of protective eyewear, and workplace modifications. Occupational vision screening may also help employers identify workplace conditions that pose risks to workers' eye health and strengthen occupational safety measures. Conversely, inadequate screening coverage, shortage of trained eye-care personnel, limited screening equipment, low worker participation, poor awareness, and weak referral and follow-up systems may reduce the effectiveness of occupational vision screening. The study therefore expects regular and comprehensive occupational vision screening to contribute significantly to improved detection and early management of visual impairment among industrial workers in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on occupational vision screening, visual impairment detection, industrial worker health, occupational eye health, workplace safety, preventive eye care, occupational health, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, employers, industrial organizations, occupational health practitioners, optometrists, ophthalmologists, workplace safety officers, healthcare providers, trade unions, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for improving workers' eye health. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for expanding periodic occupational vision screening, improving access to workplace eye examinations, strengthening training and deployment of eye-care personnel, increasing worker awareness of occupational eye hazards, improving availability of appropriate vision screening equipment, promoting the use of protective eyewear, strengthening referral and follow-up systems, and ensuring compliance with occupational health and safety standards to prevent and detect visual impairment among industrial workers across Nigeria.
