Impact of Self-Care Education on Self-Care Practices among Mental Health Professionals in Nigeria

Abstract

Self-care is an important component of occupational well-being among mental health professionals because of their regular exposure to psychological distress, trauma, crisis situations, emotional demands, complex client needs, and high workloads. Mental health professionals in Nigeria may also experience staff shortages, limited resources, challenging working environments, high caseloads, and inadequate opportunities for rest and professional recovery. Poor self-care practices may increase vulnerability to occupational stress, emotional exhaustion, compassion fatigue, burnout, reduced job satisfaction, and impaired quality of professional practice. Self-care education provides an opportunity to equip mental health professionals with knowledge and practical skills for recognizing occupational stress, maintaining healthy routines, establishing professional boundaries, managing workload, obtaining social and professional support, engaging in restorative activities, and seeking appropriate assistance when necessary. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of self-care education on self-care practices among mental health professionals in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Social Cognitive Theory, the Job Demands–Resources Model, and the Health Belief Model. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes the roles of knowledge, self-efficacy, behavioural skills, observational learning, and environmental influences in the development and maintenance of self-care practices. The Job Demands–Resources Model explains how high emotional and occupational demands may contribute to exhaustion and reduced well-being, while workplace resources, social support, autonomy, and recovery opportunities may promote professional well-being. The Health Belief Model explains how mental health professionals' perceptions of susceptibility to occupational stress and burnout, perceived severity, perceived benefits of self-care, perceived barriers, and cues to action may influence their adoption of self-care practices. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how self-care education may influence self-care practices among mental health professionals in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise mental health professionals, including psychologists, psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, social workers, counsellors, and other appropriately recognized mental health practitioners working in selected public and private healthcare institutions across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, healthcare institutions, departments, mental health units, and eligible professionals. Self-care education will be measured using indicators such as exposure to structured self-care education, training frequency and duration, awareness of occupational stress, recognition of early signs of burnout and emotional exhaustion, stress management, emotional regulation, workload management, professional boundary setting, sleep management, physical activity, healthy nutrition, relaxation and restorative activities, social support, supervision, peer support, counselling and professional help-seeking, and access to self-care resources. Self-care practices will be assessed using indicators such as regular physical activity, adequate sleep, healthy nutrition, relaxation practices, leisure and restorative activities, effective workload management, professional boundary maintenance, use of supervision, peer-support engagement, appropriate help-seeking, stress management, emotional self-monitoring, utilization of counselling services, and maintenance of work–life balance. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires and appropriately validated self-care knowledge and practice instruments administered before and after the educational intervention where a quasi-experimental design is used. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize professionals' demographic and occupational characteristics, exposure to self-care education, and self-care practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired or independent sample tests, chi-square tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of self-care education on self-care practices. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that self-care education has a significant positive impact on self-care practices among mental health professionals in Nigeria. Professionals exposed to structured self-care education are expected to demonstrate greater adoption of healthy self-care practices than professionals without similar educational exposure or compared with their baseline practices. Education may improve professionals' ability to recognize occupational stress, identify early signs of emotional exhaustion, manage workloads, establish appropriate professional boundaries, maintain healthy sleep and physical activity patterns, engage in restorative activities, utilize supervision and peer support, and seek professional assistance when necessary. Practical and skills-based education may be particularly effective in translating self-care knowledge into everyday professional and personal practices. However, high caseloads, staff shortages, long working hours, inadequate resources, limited organizational support, stigma surrounding professional help-seeking, financial pressures, and insufficient opportunities for rest and supervision may restrict professionals' ability to consistently apply recommended self-care practices. The study therefore expects accessible, practical, workplace-oriented, culturally appropriate, and sustained self-care education to contribute significantly to improved self-care practices among mental health professionals in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on self-care education, self-care practices, mental health professionals, occupational well-being, burnout prevention, compassion fatigue, workplace mental health, professional resilience, health education, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, state ministries of health, healthcare institutions, professional regulatory bodies, professional associations, hospital administrators, mental health service providers, psychologists, psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, social workers, counsellors, public health practitioners, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening the well-being of the mental health workforce. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating self-care education into mental health professional training and continuing professional development, strengthening workplace wellness programmes, improving access to supervision and professional support, promoting appropriate workload management and rest periods, reducing stigma around help-seeking, and establishing sustainable self-care and occupational well-being programmes across mental health services in Nigeria.
