Impact of Recreational Water Quality Education on Safe Water-Contact Practices among Residents of Riverine Communities in Nigeria
Abstract
Recreational contact with rivers, streams, lakes, and other natural water bodies is common in many riverine communities in Nigeria and may provide opportunities for bathing, swimming, fishing, transportation, social activities, and other forms of water contact. However, contact with contaminated recreational water may expose residents to microbial pathogens, parasites, chemical pollutants, and other environmental health hazards. Inadequate knowledge of recreational water quality, pollution sources, waterborne diseases, warning signs, and appropriate protective behaviours may increase the risk of preventable water-related health problems. Recreational water quality education provides an opportunity to improve residents' understanding of water contamination risks and promote safer behaviours when interacting with rivers and other natural water bodies. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of recreational water quality education on safe water-contact practices among residents of riverine communities in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Health Belief Model, Social Ecological Model, and Social Cognitive Theory. The Health Belief Model explains how residents' perceptions of susceptibility to waterborne diseases, perceived severity of recreational-water-related health risks, perceived benefits of safe water-contact practices, perceived barriers, and cues to action may influence their behaviour. The Social Ecological Model emphasizes the influence of individual, household, community, environmental, socioeconomic, and institutional factors on recreational water exposure and safety practices. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes observational learning, behavioural modelling, self-efficacy, reinforcement, and environmental influences in developing and maintaining safe water-contact behaviours. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how recreational water quality education may influence safe water-contact practices among residents of riverine communities in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise adults aged 18 years and above residing in selected riverine communities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, riverine local government areas, communities, households, and eligible respondents. Recreational water quality education will be assessed using indicators such as exposure to water-quality education sessions, frequency and duration of education, knowledge of sources of water pollution, awareness of microbial and chemical contamination, understanding of common waterborne diseases, knowledge of water-quality warning signs, awareness of risks associated with sewage and waste contamination, knowledge of appropriate hygiene after water contact, awareness of hazardous water conditions, and understanding of situations in which recreational water contact should be avoided. Safe water-contact practices will be assessed using indicators such as avoiding contact with visibly polluted water, avoiding water bodies following sewage contamination or flooding where appropriate, preventing ingestion of recreational water, maintaining personal hygiene after water contact, protecting open wounds from contaminated water, avoiding unnecessary contact with potentially contaminated water, using appropriate protective measures during high-risk activities, avoiding water contact when experiencing conditions that may increase contamination risks, promptly washing exposed body parts where appropriate, and seeking healthcare following concerning symptoms after water exposure. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, recreational water safety knowledge and practice assessment tools, environmental observation checklists, community water-quality education records, and pre-test and post-test assessments where a quasi-experimental intervention is adopted. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize participants' demographic characteristics, patterns of recreational water contact, sources of water-quality information, exposure to education, and safe water-contact practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of recreational water quality education on safe water-contact practices. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, safe water-contact practice scores before and after the educational intervention may be compared with those of a comparison group to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that recreational water quality education has a significant positive impact on safe water-contact practices among residents of riverine communities in Nigeria. Residents exposed to structured and practical water-quality education are expected to demonstrate greater awareness of recreational water hazards and safer behaviours during contact with rivers and other natural water bodies. Education may improve residents' ability to recognize potential sources of contamination, avoid visibly polluted or hazardous water, prevent ingestion of recreational water, protect open wounds, maintain appropriate personal hygiene after water contact, and seek appropriate healthcare when symptoms occur following exposure. Practical demonstrations and community-specific education may improve residents' ability to apply water-safety information to their daily activities. However, dependence on rivers for livelihood and domestic activities, limited access to alternative water sources, flooding, poor sanitation, inadequate waste disposal, sewage contamination, limited environmental monitoring, and socioeconomic constraints may reduce the effectiveness of education alone. The study therefore expects accessible, practical, culturally appropriate, and continuous recreational water quality education, supported by improved sanitation, water-quality monitoring, environmental management, and access to safer water sources, to contribute significantly to improved safe water-contact practices among residents of riverine communities in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on recreational water quality, water-contact practices, waterborne disease prevention, environmental health, community health education, water sanitation and hygiene, health promotion, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, Federal Ministry of Environment, Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, state ministries and agencies responsible for health and environmental management, local government authorities, environmental health officers, community health workers, public health practitioners, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for reducing health risks associated with recreational water exposure. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for strengthening community recreational water quality education, improving public awareness of water contamination risks, promoting safer water-contact behaviours, strengthening environmental sanitation and waste management, improving recreational water-quality monitoring, and developing sustainable water-safety interventions for riverine communities across Nigeria.
