Impact of Pharmacy Education on Responsible Medicine Use among University Students in Nigeria

Abstract

Responsible medicine use is an important component of public health because inappropriate use of medicines can result in treatment failure, adverse drug reactions, drug interactions, medication dependence, antimicrobial resistance, and other avoidable health consequences. University students may be particularly exposed to inappropriate medicine-use practices because of self-medication, peer influence, easy access to medicines, online health information, academic pressures, and limited consultation with healthcare professionals. Pharmacy education provides students with relevant information about the safe and appropriate use of medicines, including correct dosage, frequency and duration of use, adherence to prescriptions, potential adverse effects, drug interactions, contraindications, medicine storage, risks of self-medication, responsible use of antibiotics, and the importance of seeking professional advice before using medicines. Responsible medicine use refers to the appropriate selection, acquisition, administration, storage, and disposal of medicines in accordance with professional healthcare advice and approved treatment instructions. In Nigeria, inappropriate medicine-use practices among young adults may contribute to medication errors, unnecessary antibiotic use, adverse drug reactions, and delayed professional healthcare-seeking. Effective pharmacy education may improve students' knowledge and practical understanding of safe medicine use and encourage responsible medication-related behaviour. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of pharmacy education on responsible medicine use among university students in Nigeria. The study is anchored on the Health Belief Model, Social Cognitive Theory, and the Knowledge-Attitude-Practice framework. The Health Belief Model provides a framework for understanding responsible medicine use through students' perceptions of medication-related risks, perceived severity of adverse consequences, perceived benefits of appropriate medicine use, perceived barriers, and cues to action. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes the interaction between knowledge, self-efficacy, observational learning, social influences, and environmental factors in shaping medicine-use behaviour. The Knowledge-Attitude-Practice framework provides a basis for examining how pharmacy education may improve students' knowledge and attitudes toward medicines and translate these improvements into responsible medicine-use practices. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how pharmacy education may influence responsible medicine use among university students in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. Primary data will be collected from undergraduate students in selected Nigerian universities using a structured self-administered questionnaire, medicine-use knowledge assessment, and responsible medicine-use practice scale. A multistage sampling technique will be employed to select universities, faculties or departments, academic levels, and eligible students. Where feasible, selected student groups will be assigned to intervention and comparison groups. Students in the intervention group will receive structured pharmacy education through lectures, interactive health talks, case scenarios, medication-use demonstrations, educational materials, and appropriate digital learning resources. The education will cover responsible medicine selection and use, prescription adherence, dosage and timing, treatment duration, risks of self-medication, antibiotic stewardship, medication interactions, adverse drug reactions, contraindications, medicine storage, safe medicine disposal, and the importance of consulting pharmacists or other qualified healthcare professionals. Responsible medicine use will be assessed using indicators such as adherence to prescribed dosage and duration, avoidance of inappropriate self-medication, responsible antibiotic use, checking medicine instructions, consultation with healthcare professionals, recognition of potential adverse effects, appropriate medicine storage, and safe disposal practices. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' sociodemographic characteristics, previous exposure to medicine-related education, medicine knowledge, and medicine-use practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired-sample tests, independent-sample tests, and multiple regression analysis, will be used to determine the impact of pharmacy education on responsible medicine use. Where appropriate, medicine-use practices before and after the intervention will be compared. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability of the research instruments, model assumptions, goodness of fit, multicollinearity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that pharmacy education has a significant positive impact on responsible medicine use among university students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured pharmacy education are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of appropriate medicine use, greater awareness of medication-related risks, reduced reliance on inappropriate self-medication, and improved adherence to recommended medicine-use instructions. Pharmacy education is also expected to improve students' understanding of antibiotic stewardship, medication interactions, adverse drug reactions, and the importance of consulting qualified healthcare professionals before using medicines. Interactive and practical education is expected to be particularly effective because it allows students to apply medicine-use principles to realistic situations and develop appropriate decision-making skills. However, pharmacy education alone may not eliminate inappropriate medicine-use practices because students may continue to encounter barriers such as easy access to medicines without prescriptions, peer influence, online misinformation, financial constraints, previous medication experiences, and perceptions that professional consultation is unnecessary. Consequently, pharmacy education may be most effective when supported by appropriate medicine regulation, accessible pharmaceutical services, reliable health information, and strengthened antimicrobial stewardship initiatives. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on pharmacy education, responsible medicine use, self-medication, medication safety, health education, pharmaceutical care, antimicrobial stewardship, university health, and public health in Nigeria by providing empirical evidence on the impact of structured pharmacy education on medicine-use behaviour among university students. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Pharmacists Council of Nigeria, universities, university health centres, pharmacy departments, pharmacists, health educators, public health practitioners, professional healthcare organizations, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for promoting responsible medicine use among young adults. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for incorporating medicine-use education into university health-promotion programmes, strengthening pharmacist-led health education, improving students' access to credible medicine information, promoting responsible antibiotic use, addressing medication misinformation, and encouraging consultation with qualified healthcare professionals before medicine use among university students in Nigeria.
