Impact of Personal Hygiene Education on Hygiene Practices among Secondary School Students in Nigeria

Abstract

Personal hygiene is an important component of public health and plays a significant role in preventing communicable diseases, promoting healthy living, and improving the overall well-being of school-aged children and adolescents. Secondary school students may be exposed to conditions that increase their risk of hygiene-related illnesses, particularly where access to clean water, sanitation facilities, and appropriate hygiene resources is inadequate. Personal hygiene education provides students with information and practical skills concerning handwashing, bathing, oral hygiene, menstrual hygiene where applicable, nail care, proper disposal of waste, safe food handling, and other practices that contribute to personal cleanliness and disease prevention. Hygiene practices refer to the routine behaviours adopted by individuals to maintain personal cleanliness and reduce exposure to infectious agents. In Nigeria, inadequate knowledge, poor access to water and sanitation facilities, overcrowded school environments, and misconceptions about personal hygiene may contribute to poor hygiene practices among secondary school students. Effective personal hygiene education may improve students' knowledge, attitudes, and practical application of appropriate hygiene behaviours. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of personal hygiene education on hygiene practices among secondary school students in Nigeria. The study is anchored on the Health Belief Model, Social Cognitive Theory, and Knowledge-Attitude-Practice framework. The Health Belief Model explains health-related behaviour through perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits, perceived barriers, and cues to action, providing a basis for understanding students' decisions to adopt appropriate hygiene practices. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes the interaction between knowledge, self-efficacy, social influences, behavioural capabilities, and environmental conditions in shaping hygiene behaviours. The Knowledge-Attitude-Practice framework provides a basis for examining how improved knowledge and attitudes resulting from personal hygiene education may influence students' hygiene practices. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how personal hygiene education may influence hygiene practices among secondary school students in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. Primary data will be collected from students in selected secondary schools in Nigeria using a structured self-administered questionnaire and, where feasible, a school hygiene observation checklist. A multistage sampling technique will be employed to select states, local government areas, secondary schools, classes, and eligible students. Where feasible, selected schools will be assigned to intervention and comparison groups. Students in the intervention group will receive structured personal hygiene education covering hand hygiene, bathing, oral hygiene, nail care, hair and skin cleanliness, menstrual hygiene where applicable, appropriate use of toilets, waste disposal, food hygiene, prevention of communicable diseases, and maintenance of a clean personal and school environment. Hygiene practices will be assessed using indicators such as frequency and appropriate technique of handwashing, bathing practices, oral hygiene, nail and hair cleanliness, appropriate toilet practices, safe food-handling practices, waste disposal, and other relevant personal hygiene behaviours. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' sociodemographic characteristics, hygiene knowledge, exposure to education, and hygiene practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired-sample tests, independent-sample tests, and multiple regression analysis, will be used to determine the impact of personal hygiene education on hygiene practices. Appropriate diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability of the research instrument, model assumptions, goodness of fit, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that personal hygiene education has a significant positive impact on hygiene practices among secondary school students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured personal hygiene education are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of hygiene and greater adoption of appropriate hygiene behaviours. Education may improve handwashing practices, personal cleanliness, oral hygiene, nail care, toilet hygiene, food hygiene, and appropriate waste disposal. It may also increase students' awareness of the relationship between poor hygiene and communicable diseases and encourage consistent adoption of preventive behaviours. However, education alone may not guarantee sustained hygiene practices because students may continue to face barriers such as inadequate water supply, insufficient toilet facilities, limited availability of soap and other hygiene materials, overcrowding, poor school sanitation, and inadequate maintenance of school facilities. Consequently, personal hygiene education is expected to be most effective when supported by adequate water, sanitation and hygiene facilities, availability of hygiene materials, supportive school policies, and continuous health-promotion activities. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on school health, personal hygiene, health education, communicable disease prevention, environmental health, and public health in Nigeria by providing empirical evidence on the impact of personal hygiene education on hygiene practices among secondary school students. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Education, state ministries of health and education, local education authorities, school administrators, teachers, school health coordinators, community health workers, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for improving hygiene among adolescents. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for strengthening school-based personal hygiene education, improving water and sanitation facilities, ensuring availability of soap and other hygiene materials, integrating practical hygiene activities into school health programmes, and promoting sustainable hygiene practices among secondary school students across Nigeria.
