Effect of WhatsApp Mental Health Education on Mental Health Literacy among University Students in Nigeria
Abstract
Mental health literacy is an important component of mental health promotion, early recognition of psychological difficulties, reduction of stigma, and appropriate help-seeking among university students in Nigeria. University students increasingly use WhatsApp for communication, academic interaction, information sharing, and social engagement, making the platform a potentially useful channel for delivering accessible mental health education. WhatsApp-based mental health education may provide students with information about common mental health conditions, symptoms and warning signs, risk factors, coping strategies, available treatment options, mental health services, and appropriate help-seeking. However, differences in students' access to reliable information, misinformation shared through digital platforms, and varying levels of engagement may affect the effectiveness of WhatsApp-based health education. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of WhatsApp mental health education on mental health literacy among university students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Uses and Gratifications Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and the Health Belief Model. The Uses and Gratifications Theory explains how students use WhatsApp to obtain information, interact socially, participate in groups, and satisfy educational and personal needs. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes observational learning, social interaction, self-efficacy, reinforcement, and repeated exposure to information in the development of health knowledge and behaviours. The Health Belief Model explains how mental health education may influence students' perceptions of susceptibility to mental health problems, perceived severity, perceived benefits of appropriate mental health practices, perceived barriers, and cues to action. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how WhatsApp mental health education may influence mental health literacy among university students in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The study population will comprise undergraduate students enrolled in selected public and private universities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, universities, faculties, departments, and eligible students. WhatsApp mental health education will be measured using indicators such as exposure to structured WhatsApp educational sessions, frequency of educational messages, duration of programme participation, types of mental health information received, use of text messages, infographics, audio messages and videos, participation in WhatsApp discussion groups, interaction with mental health educators, access to educational materials, frequency of engagement, and referral information provided through the platform. Mental health literacy will be assessed using indicators such as knowledge of common mental health conditions, recognition of symptoms and warning signs, understanding of mental health risk factors, knowledge of treatment and recovery, awareness of mental health services, recognition of psychological distress, understanding of mental health misconceptions and stigma, knowledge of appropriate help-seeking options, and awareness of available professional support. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, validated mental health literacy instruments, and relevant WhatsApp programme participation measures. Mental health literacy will be assessed before and after exposure to the WhatsApp mental health education intervention. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, WhatsApp usage patterns, exposure to mental health education, and levels of mental health literacy. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired sample tests, independent sample tests, chi-square tests, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of WhatsApp mental health education on mental health literacy. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that WhatsApp mental health education has a significant positive effect on mental health literacy among university students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured and evidence-based WhatsApp mental health education are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of common mental health conditions, recognition of symptoms and warning signs, understanding of treatment and recovery, awareness of available mental health services, and knowledge of appropriate help-seeking options compared with their baseline literacy or students without similar intervention exposure. The use of text messages, infographics, audio materials, videos, interactive discussions, and professionally developed educational content may make mental health information accessible and engaging to students. WhatsApp may also facilitate repeated exposure to educational messages and allow students to access information at convenient times. However, misinformation, low participation, unreliable internet access, data costs, message overload, privacy concerns, and limited interaction with qualified mental health professionals may reduce the effectiveness of the intervention. The study therefore expects accessible, professionally developed, evidence-based, and well-structured WhatsApp mental health education to contribute significantly to improved mental health literacy among university students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on WhatsApp mental health education, mental health literacy, university students, digital health education, social media health communication, mental health promotion, e-health, health communication, stigma reduction, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Education, National Universities Commission, universities, counselling centres, psychologists, psychiatrists, public health practitioners, digital health educators, student organizations, development partners, and policymakers regarding the use of messaging platforms for mental health promotion. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating WhatsApp-based mental health education into university health programmes, developing credible and culturally appropriate digital mental health materials, strengthening interaction between students and qualified mental health professionals, addressing misinformation, protecting students' privacy, and developing sustainable digital mental health literacy programmes across Nigerian universities.
