Effect of Tissue Donation Education on Knowledge of Tissue Donation among Healthcare Students in Nigeria

Abstract

Tissue donation is an important component of modern healthcare because donated human tissues can support reconstructive surgery, burn treatment, ophthalmic procedures, orthopaedic care, cardiovascular surgery, and other medical interventions that may improve patients' health and quality of life. Healthcare students represent an important future workforce for promoting accurate information about tissue donation and supporting informed discussions with patients and families. However, limited knowledge of tissue donation, uncertainty about donor eligibility, misconceptions about donation procedures, concerns about bodily integrity, religious and cultural beliefs, and inadequate exposure to donation education may influence healthcare students' understanding of tissue donation. Tissue donation education provides an opportunity to improve students' knowledge of the purpose, eligibility, consent requirements, donation procedures, tissue recovery, safety, ethical considerations, and potential uses of donated tissues. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of tissue donation education on knowledge of tissue donation among healthcare students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Health Belief Model, Health Literacy Theory, and Social Cognitive Theory. The Health Belief Model explains how students' perceptions of the importance of tissue donation, perceived benefits, perceived barriers, self-efficacy, and cues to action may influence their knowledge and attitudes toward donation. Health Literacy Theory emphasizes students' ability to obtain, understand, evaluate, and apply accurate information concerning tissue donation, donor eligibility, consent, ethical considerations, and healthcare procedures. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes observational learning, professional role modelling, peer influence, self-efficacy, reinforcement, and educational environments in shaping students' understanding of tissue donation. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how tissue donation education may influence knowledge of tissue donation among healthcare students in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise undergraduate healthcare students aged 18 years and above enrolled in selected universities and health training institutions across Nigeria. The population may include students in medicine, nursing, pharmacy, medical laboratory science, physiotherapy, radiography, public health, dentistry, and other relevant healthcare disciplines. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, institutions, faculties or departments, levels of study, and eligible students. Tissue donation education will be assessed using indicators such as exposure to educational sessions, frequency and duration of education, information about types of donated tissues, potential medical uses, donor eligibility, consent procedures, donor and recipient safety, tissue recovery, preservation and transplantation, ethical considerations, confidentiality, cultural and religious considerations, myths and misconceptions, and relevant regulatory or institutional procedures. Knowledge of tissue donation will be assessed using indicators such as students' understanding of the purpose and benefits of tissue donation, types of tissues that may be donated, donor eligibility, consent requirements, basic donation procedures, tissue recovery and preservation, safety considerations, ethical principles, confidentiality, appropriate communication with patients and families, and sources of reliable tissue-donation information. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, standardized tissue-donation knowledge assessment tools, scenario-based questions, educational programme records where available, and pre-test and post-test assessments where a quasi-experimental intervention is adopted. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, healthcare discipline, previous exposure to donation education, sources of information, and knowledge levels. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired and independent t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of tissue donation education on knowledge of tissue donation. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, knowledge scores before and after the educational intervention may be compared with those of a comparison group to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that tissue donation education has a significant positive effect on knowledge of tissue donation among healthcare students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured, evidence-based, professionally relevant, and practical tissue donation education are expected to demonstrate greater knowledge of tissue donation than students without comparable exposure. Education may improve students' understanding of donor eligibility, consent procedures, types and uses of donated tissues, tissue recovery and preservation, safety requirements, ethical principles, and appropriate communication with patients and families. It may also correct misconceptions concerning tissue donation and improve students' confidence in discussing donation-related information within their professional roles. However, cultural and religious beliefs, concerns about bodily integrity, limited exposure to transplantation and tissue-banking services, inadequate curriculum coverage, misinformation, and limited availability of trained educators may reduce the effectiveness of education alone. The study therefore expects accessible, evidence-based, ethically appropriate, and sustained tissue donation education to contribute significantly to improved knowledge of tissue donation among healthcare students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on tissue donation, transplantation, healthcare education, health literacy, donation awareness, medical ethics, healthcare professional training, transplant services, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, relevant national and state health authorities, transplant and tissue-recovery centres, universities, healthcare training institutions, hospitals, professional regulatory bodies, healthcare educators, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening healthcare students' knowledge of tissue donation. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating tissue donation education into healthcare curricula, strengthening practical training on donation and transplantation, improving students' knowledge of ethical and consent requirements, addressing cultural and religious misconceptions, strengthening communication skills for discussing donation with patients and families, and developing sustainable educational programmes that prepare future healthcare professionals to provide accurate and ethical information about tissue donation in Nigeria.
