Effect of Substance Abuse Prevention Education on Substance Use Prevention Practices among Secondary School Students in Nigeria
Abstract
Substance use among adolescents is an important public health concern in Nigeria because early exposure to psychoactive substances may increase the risk of dependence, mental health problems, poor academic performance, risky behaviours, injuries, and other adverse health and social outcomes. Secondary school students represent an important population for substance use prevention because adolescence is a critical period for the development of health behaviours and attitudes. Substance abuse prevention education provides students with information about commonly misused substances, risk factors, health and social consequences, peer pressure, refusal skills, healthy coping strategies, sources of support, and the importance of avoiding harmful substance use. Substance use prevention practices refer to behaviours adopted by students to avoid or reduce exposure to psychoactive substances, including refusing offers to use substances, avoiding high-risk social situations, resisting peer pressure, seeking appropriate support, and adopting healthy coping and recreational activities. In Nigeria, factors such as peer influence, family and social environment, availability of substances, stress, curiosity, misinformation, and inadequate knowledge may contribute to substance use among adolescents. Effective prevention education may improve students' knowledge, attitudes, refusal skills, and ability to adopt behaviours that reduce the likelihood of substance use. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of substance abuse prevention education on substance use prevention practices among secondary school students in Nigeria. The study is anchored on the Health Belief Model, Social Cognitive Theory, and Theory of Planned Behavior. The Health Belief Model explains preventive behaviour through perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits, perceived barriers, and cues to action, providing a basis for understanding students' decisions to avoid substance use. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes the interaction between knowledge, self-efficacy, social influences, behavioural capabilities, and environmental conditions in shaping adolescent behaviour. The Theory of Planned Behavior explains how students' attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioural control influence their intentions and subsequent substance use prevention practices. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how substance abuse prevention education may influence preventive practices among secondary school students in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. Primary data will be collected from students in selected secondary schools in Nigeria using a structured anonymous self-administered questionnaire. A multistage sampling technique will be employed to select states, local government areas, secondary schools, classes, and eligible students. Where feasible, selected schools or student groups will be assigned to intervention and comparison groups. Students in the intervention group will receive structured substance abuse prevention education covering commonly misused substances, health and social consequences of substance use, risk factors, peer pressure, decision-making, refusal and resistance skills, healthy coping mechanisms, stress management, positive social activities, sources of counselling and support, and appropriate help-seeking. Substance use prevention practices will be assessed using indicators such as ability to refuse substance offers, resistance to peer pressure, avoidance of high-risk situations, use of healthy coping strategies, willingness to seek support from trusted adults or professionals, and participation in substance-free recreational activities. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' sociodemographic characteristics, substance-use knowledge, exposure to prevention education, and prevention practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired-sample tests, independent-sample tests, and multiple regression analysis, will be used to determine the effect of substance abuse prevention education on substance use prevention practices. Appropriate diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability of the research instrument, model assumptions, goodness of fit, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that substance abuse prevention education has a significant positive effect on substance use prevention practices among secondary school students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured prevention education are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of the risks associated with substance use, stronger refusal skills, greater confidence in resisting peer pressure, and increased adoption of behaviours that reduce exposure to substance use. Education may also encourage students to seek support when experiencing pressure or challenges that could increase vulnerability to substance use. However, education alone may not guarantee sustained preventive practices because students may continue to experience peer pressure, family-related challenges, stress, easy availability of substances, social influences, and limited access to counselling and adolescent-friendly support services. Consequently, substance abuse prevention education is expected to be most effective when supported by school counselling services, supportive family environments, positive peer networks, appropriate school policies, community-based prevention programmes, and accessible adolescent health services. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on adolescent substance use prevention, health education, school health, behavioural health, mental health promotion, and public health in Nigeria by providing empirical evidence on the effect of substance abuse prevention education on substance use prevention practices among secondary school students. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Education, National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), state ministries of health and education, school administrators, teachers, counsellors, parents, community health workers, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for preventing substance use among adolescents. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for strengthening school-based substance abuse prevention education, improving counselling and psychosocial support services, developing peer-led prevention programmes, strengthening parent and community involvement, promoting healthy coping skills, and creating supportive school environments that reduce the risk of substance use among secondary school students across Nigeria.
