Effect of Substance Abuse Education on Substance Use Practices among Secondary School Students in Nigeria

Abstract

Substance use among adolescents is an important public health concern because early exposure to psychoactive substances may negatively affect physical health, mental well-being, academic performance, social relationships, and future health behaviours. Secondary school students represent an important population for substance-use prevention because adolescence is a critical period during which attitudes, beliefs, and behavioural patterns are formed. Substance abuse education involves structured health education aimed at providing students with accurate information about commonly misused substances, their health and social consequences, risk factors, refusal skills, coping strategies, and available sources of support. Substance use practices refer to the use or non-use of psychoactive substances such as alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, prescription medicines used without medical direction, inhalants, and other substances. In Nigeria, adolescents may be exposed to substance use through peer influence, family and community environments, social media, availability of substances, academic and social pressures, and inadequate knowledge of the consequences of substance misuse. Effective substance abuse education may improve students' knowledge, attitudes, risk perception, decision-making skills, and ability to resist pressure to use psychoactive substances. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of substance abuse education on substance use practices among secondary school students in Nigeria. The study is anchored on Social Cognitive Theory (SCT), Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), and the Health Belief Model (HBM). Social Cognitive Theory explains adolescent substance-use behaviour through interactions among individual characteristics, behavioural factors, environmental influences, observational learning, and self-efficacy. The Theory of Planned Behavior proposes that attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioural control influence behavioural intentions and subsequent actions, providing a basis for understanding students' decisions regarding substance use. The Health Belief Model explains health-related behaviour through perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits, perceived barriers, and cues to action. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a comprehensive framework for explaining how substance abuse education may influence substance use practices among secondary school students in Nigeria. The study adopts a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. Primary data will be collected from students in selected public and private secondary schools in Nigeria using a structured, anonymous, self-administered questionnaire. A multistage sampling technique will be employed to select states, local government areas, schools, classes, and eligible students. Where feasible, selected schools will be assigned to intervention and comparison groups. Students in the intervention group will receive a structured substance abuse education programme covering commonly misused substances, short- and long-term health consequences, effects on academic and social functioning, risk factors, peer-pressure resistance, decision-making skills, coping strategies, myths and misconceptions, and available support services. Substance use practices will be assessed using measures of lifetime and recent use, frequency of use, age at initiation, use of selected substances, and related risk behaviours, while protecting students' privacy and confidentiality. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' sociodemographic characteristics, substance-use knowledge, and reported practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired-sample tests, independent-sample tests, and multiple logistic regression analysis, will be employed to determine the effect of substance abuse education on substance use practices. Appropriate diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability of the research instrument, model assumptions, goodness of fit, and robustness of the findings. The study anticipates that substance abuse education will have a significant positive effect on substance use prevention among secondary school students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured substance abuse education are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of the health and social consequences of substance use, stronger risk perceptions, and greater ability to resist peer pressure and avoid substance use. The intervention is also expected to reduce misconceptions about psychoactive substances and improve students' awareness of appropriate sources of help. However, education alone may not completely prevent substance use because adolescent behaviour is influenced by peer networks, family environments, community conditions, substance availability, socioeconomic circumstances, stress, and exposure to substance-related content. Consequently, substance abuse education is expected to be more effective when integrated with supportive school environments, parental involvement, counselling services, early identification of students at risk, appropriate referral systems, and community-based prevention programmes. This study is expected to contribute to the literature on adolescent health, substance-use prevention, health education, school health, and public health in Nigeria by providing empirical evidence on the effect of substance abuse education on substance use practices among secondary school students. The findings will provide useful information for the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Education, National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), state ministries of health and education, school administrators, teachers, school counsellors, parents, community health workers, and policymakers regarding strategies for preventing substance use among adolescents. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for strengthening school-based substance abuse education, improving counselling and psychosocial support services, enhancing parental and community involvement, strengthening early identification and referral mechanisms, and integrating substance-use prevention into comprehensive school health programmes across Nigeria.
